Biography

Mocked for his increasingly severe physical deformities, Robert Alan Fielder spent most of his childhood and adolescence in deepening bitterness. He embraced the manifestation of his mutant ability in the worst way possible: the only record of public note was his 1990 juvenile conviction in Independence, Missouri for three counts of assault and aggravated mayhem. At some point Fielder, now calling himself Masque, worked his way across the Midwest, during which time he came into contact with the deformed telepath from X-Men Mission: Mutant Mole People and enlisted his aid with the bribe of a normal appearance. Once settled in the abandoned tunnel system in New York that became home both for him and a sizable percentage of his victims, Masque began frequent and often underreported attacks on the group of people most offensive to him: the physically attractive, especially other mutants. His crimes proceeded for several months before his activities were brought to the attention of the X-Men when he and a small group of his followers assaulted students Forge, Jay Guthrie and Kyle Gibney, leaving the three boys horrifically and painfully deformed. Currently he is in a secure holding facility on criminal charges levied by his victims.

In November 2009 during the country's biggest ever mass escape, Masque remained at Hazelton, his power creating a number of tumorous growths that at that point restricted his mobility. He found plenty to 'entertain' himself with, however, using Infectia's Anti-Bodies, prison personnel and fellow prisoners as 'canvasses' upon which to use his powers.

Powers/Abilities

Masque has the ability to physically reshape organic matter, specifically that of living bodies. The changes he inflicts can be extensive, and, when he takes the proper time and care, extremely functional; Masque's own studies in anatomy have given him the basis to mimic almost any adaptation that exists in the animal world, as well as the ability to envision and inflict ones that don't, but could. Among other things, he has been shown as transmuting hands into functional tentacles and allowed a previously blind man to see again through segmented, insect-like eyes. If applied for the right reasons, his mutation has the potential to be extremely beneficial. However, in most cases Masque's only concern was shock-value to the victim. Those unfortunate enough to suffer from one of his blitz-attacks often suffered a degree of physical pain as a result of his "spontaneous" use of power.

Masque's power has a subtle psychic component that allows him to attune to the victim's sense of personal reality -- not only what their body's "default" state was, which allows for fairly easy repair, but also the state they would find most personally horrifying; it's no coincidence that many of his victims find themselves living their worst nightmares. Additionally, he can dictate whether the changes will be permanent or less so. One of the ways in which he exerted power over his victims was to taunt them with a temporary return to normalcy.

Trivia

Masque's power, as wielded by Marius while he was pulling damage control, is the reason why Forge no longer carries the burn-scars he incurred from his accident pre-Xavier's.
