It was later found that the Lees were murdered by accident, as the result of mistaken identity, but that was too late for the young Jubilee who found herself cast adrift in the foster care system. Eventually she was placed with a family and initially did well, but upon her foster father losing his job, she became the target of his drunken rages and was often beaten. It was after one such incident that her powers manifested, and she burned the man rather seriously.

Frightened by the display of power and afraid of what would happen to her as a mutant in the social services system, Jubilee ran away, making her way south to Los Angeles. She spent the next year or so living in one of the many malls, shoplifting and performing small scams to survive. It was during one of these scams that she met Jean Grey and Ororo Munroe, who invited the young mutant to come back to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters with them. Much to Jubilee's own surprise, she accepted the offer, and became a student.

Over the next several years, Jubilee suffered many ups and downs. She made friends and began to settle down, catching up on her schooling. Jean's apparent death and her own abduction by Styker's men hit her hard, and she was just beginning to get over this when the mansion was invaded a second time. During the course of this incident, Jubilee killed one of the attackers with her powers. She spent much time subsequently undergoing therapy for post traumatic shock disorder, and made many mistakes in relation to other people. The most notable of these was her believe her arch-nemesis, Amanda Sefton was in some way planning to harm the school, and instead of telling the staff, Jubilee took matters into her own hands, resulting in a demon attack at Halloween.

Jubilee also embarked on an ill-advised flirtation with Manuel de la Rocha during this time, which culminated in a powers fight between herself and Manuel's girlfriend, Amanda. This, plus the demon attack, sank Jubilee to her lowest depths, and it was then that she found support in the particular form of Alison Blaire, Nathan Dayspring, Madelyn Bartlet and Hank McCoy. With their assistance, she began rebuilding her life, eventually becoming a trainee and entering police school. She also acquired a boyfriend, a human boy called David who she met at a concert.

In mid-2006, all Jubilee had built came tumbling down again, as it was discovered David was a small-time drug dealer. She resigned from the police training college rather than succumb to an inquiry, and moved back to the mansion. Seeking advice from Scott Summers, with whom she'd always had a complicated relationship, she went to join the West Coast Annex in July 2006. She remains in contact with her friends, including Amanda, with whom she made a reconciliation in late 2005.

Jubilee generates explosive plasma constructs that remain briefly stable before releasing their energy violently. Through concentration, she is able to control these 'fireworks' to some extent, timing their detonation or reabsorbing them harmlessly. She can generate power as minute as small 'sparkles', or as an explosive force equivalent to several tons of TNT.

Jubilee's powers are fueled directly by her metabolism, and as such she has been shown to receive an extra boost of energy from high-carbohydrate and high-sugar foods such as candy bars and energy drinks. This often brings with it the resultant low blood sugar crash after the rush wears off, however.

Jonothon Starsmore: Slightly rebellious son of middle-class English parents, Jono managed his mutant powers with minimal issues until the Great Mutant Headache of X2. The pain caused him to lose control of his psionic energies, blowing a hole in his chest and destroying the lower part of his face. Incredibly, he survived, ultimately arriving at Xavier's to learn control of the blasts. Control wasn't forthcoming, but the embittered loner found love instead, in the form of Paige Guthrie. A further powers accident cost him his entire body, until a daring plan by the genius Forge (who harboured his own feelings for Paige), enabled him to fully reconstruct himself. The bliss of a whole body was not to be, and an encounter with Kevin Ford cost him that hard-won form. Eventually he was able to partially rebuild himself, and he and Paige returned from Muir Island Research Facility, Paige to resume her work in the medlab, Jono to resume teaching Music. The rigors of the school - and the team's presence there - proved too much, and after several months Jono decided to try life outside, moving into an apartment in Salem Center. He continues to teach at the school, and he and Paige visit each other often.

At first glance, Jono is a telepath, although his mutation is a maladaptive one. His body produces psionic energy in such a manner that it emerges as a destructive energy force, destroying most of his torso and jaw. His mutation also allows for him to survive without food, water, or oxygen. After the destruction of his original physical body, Jono's consciousness persisted as a matrix of coherent psionic energy, that over time and through the help of Forge and Paige, he was able to reform into a mimicry of his original physical body. After an accident with Kevin Ford and subsequent recovery, Jono's body is back to an incomplete, damaged state.

The main expressions of Jono's power are telepathic communication, and on occasion release of the psionic energy inside him for destructive effects. When he overexerts his powers, his 'grip' on his physical body slips, and cracks appear.
