"I've noticed. Heinz is fine, though," Madin said, digging the bottle out. "Half the places I've been that's all that's on offer anyway. I've got used to it."
+
Madin turned as the door opened and was scrambling to their feet as they processed the identity of the man in front of them. It was a small room and their shoulders hit the far wall after only a couple of steps.

"Like where? Got to be honest, not really sure where you bounced around once you left Australia. I don't do a lot with the Underground." Kane said, continuing to work the grill, turning over several sausages and a surprising number of hamburgers for just two people.
+
Oh fuck. Fuck. Fuck. The bed frame was made of metal. There was metal in the door hinges. There was probably metal everywhere. "Please. I'm sorry. Please don't."

Madin shrugged. "Around. I spent some time in Europe. Bit in like, Africa. The US. You know, around. "
+
"Please don't? Please don't what? Free you from this cage they've put you in? I can leave you here, I suppose, but it would be a bit of a waste on a quite successful attack on Charles' mansion. While his X-Men engage your Brotherhood fellows on the South Lawn, they opened up enough of a gap for Mystique and I to enter secretly. Once she disables their security system - a matter of minutes - Zero will open a portal and we'll be gone before the X-Men have a chance to even assess the damage."

"Wow, that's actually pretty impressive. It wasn't until I got to the mansion that I started real international travel. Starting as young as you did... a little jealous." He turned from the grill and started to build the buns for his food. "Mayo, mustard, tomato, pickle..." He said, mostly to himself as he built the buns. "Any good stories? I once spent three days on the run in Madripoor with an ex-SHIELD officer being chased by the Tongs and his pissed off girlfriend and we weren't sure which to be more afraid of catching us, eh?"
+
Madin stared at him in horror. "No." They took a deep breath. "Please don't kill them."

Madin grinned. "Yeah. Sounds really hectic. We were um. It was in." They paused for a second, considering what they couldn't say. "This guy. He worked in the mining industry, I guess. And he promised us we'd um. You know. It's not important. And it all went to shit and the next thing you know, we're driving out of town in like, the middle of the wet season, three am, hoping that these jeeps we ah. Found? Don't crap out on us with like, half the local government chasing us because someone paid off someone and..." I need to shut up. "It was a whole thing, you know?"
+
"Madin, if I wanted the X-Men dead, I would have done it a dozen times over by now. Misguided, certainly. Weak, without a doubt. Is that worthy of a death sentence?" Magneto paused outside of the cell door. "I must say, you have certainly exceeded my expectations."

"Fuck, heard that..." Kane said, with a snap of his tongs. "OK, last call. Just a sausage or do you want a burger as well? I'm at the stage in which they are cheesed and you can't back out of that..."
+
"I didn't. I didn't fucking come here for you." Madin still hadn't moved. He was lying. He had to be lying. The X-Men were going to die. That hadn't been the plan.

"Yeah, I'd love a burger, with cheese even," Madin said with a small smile. "Thanks."
+
"Come now, Madin. Do you honestly think I didn't see every step before you took it? Or I couldn't have prevented it at any time? No." He sighed. "I wanted you to find your way here. To experience their futility first hand. Their hypocrisy. I have no doubt they told you just how much this place was a haven for our kind. That Xavier's way was about peace. And yet..." He took a seat. "And yet." He waved at Madin's cell door. "Tell me. How long did it take before you were told that humans deserved rights over you? How their fear was your problem to fix?"

"Absolutely." After a few minutes of slapping cheese slices down, he closed the grill for a second. "Food in a minute. You want another beer?"
+
Could they get to the door before he did anything? "They didn't say that exactly. I don't. I. They never said that I have to give my rights over to humans," Madin mumbled. Except Terry had, in the discussion about the community centre. Human bigots were tolerated there and Madin hadn't set foot in the place since.

"Yeah, that would be good. Thanks." Madin pulled another bottle out of the cooler and opened it. "You need one? How'd you end up here, anyway?"
+
"For all this is a haven, how long before they showed you exactly what they thought about a mutant who didn't immediately fall into line behind their philosophies?" He said, with an arch of his brow. "I gave you the room you needed to find your way here. To see for yourself what we face; our own standing behind the same people who curse and hate us. I wanted you to understand first hand who they are and just why we need you, Madin."

"Madin, the one rule in this mansion is that I always need another one." Kane grinned, pushing the tray of now set up buns next to the grill. "I was seconded here from the RCMP. Canadian government wanted to learn from Xavier's, so they sent me down... geez, close to twenty years ago."
+
"I'm not going back." Everything else had sounded uncertain. This wasn't. "I'm not fucking going back." They should have left months ago. Mystique was taking down the security system and the X-Men were dying and this was their fault. All of it.

Madin froze. "You're a cop?" They took a deep breath and consciously relaxed their body language. "Huh. You seemed normal. Kind of dad energy, you know? Not so much stomping on the rights of the oppressed."

"It's complicated. I am a Mountie and a Special Agent of the FBI. I work in the Mutant division." Kane said, keeping his reaction light and relaxed. "It's complicated, but I'm part of the group that is figuring out the future of mutant law enforcement." He started to build the rest of the burgers and dogs.

"You'd sure have some interesting case studies from Australia, then," Madin muttered. "And Canada."

"Canada, yes. Australia has been pretty cagey and Interpol is a complete mess right now. Part of the whole SHIELD layer..." Kane said with a shrug, finally turning to drop a cooked sausage into Madin's bun and started to transfer cheeseburgers to the buns.

"Yeah, they would be."

"I also do a lot of the driving of the Danger Room here when I'm not at work, so if you haven't yet, it's worth checking out, even if you're not that interested in powers training. It's... some kind of plasma manifestation, right?"

"I call it knife hands. If I didn't have my hands full, I'd show you." Madin frowned slightly. "That's the whole paramilitary strike force training centre, mate. Is this conversation becoming a recruitment drive?"

Moment of Awesome - Madin: After their true past is revealed, Madin is placed in the Box as a temporary security measure. They certainly weren't expecting a rescue attempt by Magneto.

Madin turned as the door opened and was scrambling to their feet as they processed the identity of the man in front of them. It was a small room and their shoulders hit the far wall after only a couple of steps.

Oh fuck. Fuck. Fuck. The bed frame was made of metal. There was metal in the door hinges. There was probably metal everywhere. "Please. I'm sorry. Please don't."

Madin stared at him in horror. "No." They took a deep breath. "Please don't kill them."

"Madin, if I wanted the X-Men dead, I would have done it a dozen times over by now. Misguided, certainly. Weak, without a doubt. Is that worthy of a death sentence?" Magneto paused outside of the cell door. "I must say, you have certainly exceeded my expectations."

"I didn't. I didn't fucking come here for you." Madin still hadn't moved. He was lying. He had to be lying. The X-Men were going to die. That hadn't been the plan.
