The official biography says that Leslie was raised in the heart of New York, attending small private schools on scholarships. Her love of the arts and natural talent drove her into theatre and dance. She went on to an education at Julliard but quit school to take her breakout role.

Leslie James met Frank Dean when they were cast opposite each other in Lemon Sky. Their attraction was instantaneous but it would be several more years before they would marry. Contrary to most Hollywood marriages, Leslie took Frank's last name though her professional work is still Leslie James. It's a fairy tale romance that middle America can embrace.
