Located in District X, 'Kirby's' was originally a pub that opened after the end of Prohibition in the 30s and closed for a time in the late 90s. For the next 20 years or so, the location alternated between sitting empty and hosting a series of businesses – usually restaurants or similar – that all faded as quickly as they'd appeared.
Around 2020, married couple Rebecca and Madelyn took the spot over and overhauled it to close to its original look, aided by boxes they found in the basement full of original signed and framed newspaper front pages and photos in surprisingly good repair considering some of them were close to 100 years old and hadn't been stored in archival conditions.
The bar itself is a mix of local and craft beers, as well as a rotating mix of cocktails designed by Madelyn, a renowned mixologist who runs the front of house and bar. Food is gastropub style, and the kitchen and back of house are run by Rebecca.
Kirby's regulars are a mix of local residents in and near the district, workers in the area, and floaters that either chase the cocktail scene or decide to show off how brave they are for drinking in the mutant neighbourhood. Generally, it's a quieter location except when people come in to watch one of the NYC sports teams.
Original Kirby's, despite all the old time and sports stuff, has leaned hard into being strongly inclusive, especially as a mutant and a queer friendly space. It generally succeeds, but occasionally there are those who show up and try to start shit.
Staff
- Madelyn and Rebecca: Owner and proprietors. Madelyn frequently holds down the night/weekend shifts to focus on her cocktails.
- Chris: Main bartender for everything but cocktails (although he can make them, and does if Madelyn isn't around). He's a former metal drummer who has been working in bars for twenty years. He's heavyset with sandy brown hair, mustache/goatee, and glasses. He's quite personable but he also doesn't take any shit, having no issues cutting people off or throwing them out for any kind of racist, sexist, homophobic or mutantphobic crap, despite being a straight, white, non-mutant himself.
