Moment of Awesome - Madin: Madin lets down their guard at a mansion BBQ, to possibly the worst person if they want to keep their secrets.
"I've noticed. Heinz is fine, though," Madin said, digging the bottle out. "Half the places I've been that's all that's on offer anyway. I've got used to it." "Like where? Got to be honest, not really sure where you bounced around once you left Australia. I don't do a lot with the Underground." Kane said, continuing to work the grill, turning over several sausages and a surprising number of hamburgers for just two people. Madin shrugged. "Around. I spent some time in Europe. Bit in like, Africa. The US. You know, around. " "Wow, that's actually pretty impressive. It wasn't until I got to the mansion that I started real international travel. Starting as young as you did... a little jealous." He turned from the grill and started to build the buns for his food. "Mayo, mustard, tomato, pickle..." He said, mostly to himself as he built the buns. "Any good stories? I once spent three days on the run in Madripoor with an ex-SHIELD officer being chased by the Tongs and his pissed off girlfriend and we weren't sure which to be more afraid of catching us, eh?" Madin grinned. "Yeah. Sounds really hectic. We were um. It was in." They paused for a second, considering what they couldn't say. "This guy. He worked in the mining industry, I guess. And he promised us we'd um. You know. It's not important. And it all went to shit and the next thing you know, we're driving out of town in like, the middle of the wet season, three am, hoping that these jeeps we ah. Found? Don't crap out on us with like, half the local government chasing us because someone paid off someone and..." I need to shut up. "It was a whole thing, you know?" "Fuck, heard that..." Kane said, with a snap of his tongs. "OK, last call. Just a sausage or do you want a burger as well? I'm at the stage in which they are cheesed and you can't back out of that..." "Yeah, I'd love a burger, with cheese even," Madin said with a small smile. "Thanks." "Absolutely." After a few minutes of slapping cheese slices down, he closed the grill for a second. "Food in a minute. You want another beer?" "Yeah, that would be good. Thanks." Madin pulled another bottle out of the cooler and opened it. "You need one? How'd you end up here, anyway?" "Madin, the one rule in this mansion is that I always need another one." Kane grinned, pushing the tray of now set up buns next to the grill. "I was seconded here from the RCMP. Canadian government wanted to learn from Xavier's, so they sent me down... geez, close to twenty years ago." Madin froze. "You're a cop?" They took a deep breath and consciously relaxed their body language. "Huh. You seemed normal. Kind of dad energy, you know? Not so much stomping on the rights of the oppressed." "It's complicated. I am a Mountie and a Special Agent of the FBI. I work in the Mutant division." Kane said, keeping his reaction light and relaxed. "It's complicated, but I'm part of the group that is figuring out the future of mutant law enforcement." He started to build the rest of the burgers and dogs. "You'd sure have some interesting case studies from Australia, then," Madin muttered. "And Canada." "Canada, yes. Australia has been pretty cagey and Interpol is a complete mess right now. Part of the whole SHIELD layer..." Kane said with a shrug, finally turning to drop a cooked sausage into Madin's bun and started to transfer cheeseburgers to the buns. "Yeah, they would be." "I also do a lot of the driving of the Danger Room here when I'm not at work, so if you haven't yet, it's worth checking out, even if you're not that interested in powers training. It's... some kind of plasma manifestation, right?" "I call it knife hands. If I didn't have my hands full, I'd show you." Madin frowned slightly. "That's the whole paramilitary strike force training centre, mate. Is this conversation becoming a recruitment drive?" |
