Plot Summary

The eXcalibur team investigates an anomalous energy signature in the Irish Sea, inviting Jono, who is on vacation in Britain with Paige, to join them. Upon arriving on the Isle of Man, the team splits up to track the rift after canvasing the town and soon find themselves scattered in an otherworldly realm.

Jay and Jono awaken first, with Jono negotiating with the fae-like locals. Paige and Meggan are imprisoned and learn about the realm's dangers for humans and the fae's use of the rift for abduction and slave labor. Meanwhile, Namor and Pixie are welcomed in far different circumstances by the Grand Dame, who reveals her connection to Pixie's mother and showcases a mysterious device called The Engine.

As the Grand Dame gives them a tour, Jay and Jono navigate the surreal city to plead their case at the castle. Meggan and Paige escape and crash the same castle — in the middle of a royal reception — just as Jay and Jono are introduced as entertainment. Namor uses the chaos to negotiate their freedom in exchange for repairing The Engine.

The team investigates the malfunction, with Meggan's newfound affinity to view magic in this realm and Paige's cold iron form offering assistance, but they need what pure mechanical force cannot provide: a spark of ingenuity. Jono proposes to ignite the engine from within using his power through song.

The team's reward and exit are complicated when the Grand Dame tries to renegotiate terms, but Pixie intervenes, severing her magical hold over Namor.

The team reunites and departs, with Jay sealing the rift as they return to their world.

Trivia and Meta

Reality Details

The Holy Republic of Fae, Region of the Otherworld

Ruled by an unseen figure known as the Great Hierophant. Contrary to expectation, this area is characterized by superficial similarities to human industry: cities that ape human urbanization that seem grown from the rocks, trees, and fungi of the land without reason or consistency. Conveniences such as running water and “electricity” are in fact magic being generated by their local power source, the Engine. Currently the engine is manually powered by humans harvested from the main reality, enabled by a semi-regular thinning between the two worlds.

Inhabitants

Dozens, perhaps hundreds of different species reminiscent of being largely grouped under the definition of “the Fair Folk”. These include traditional elves, faeries, goblins, trolls, redcaps, etc. Those humans would classify as traditional elves tend to occupy the high courts, with the other races being relegated to the servant classes.

Language Barrier

None. Due to the ambient magic all languages spoken within are understood by the listeners.

Time Dilation

Inconsistent. During periods when the portals between worlds are open, time passes more quickly on Otherworld than reality. When the portals are closed it is the opposite, with human hostages being expelled after what they perceive to be months or years, only to find themselves displaced from their lives by decades.

Trivia

The team discovers that the rules for different realities may change the way that physics and logic work — both Jay and Jono are able to utilize song to great, almost magical, affect in the Otherworld.

Similarly, the overabundance of magic gave Meggan the temporary ability to view the flow of magical energy.
