Plot Summary
The year is 2023 and the world is a darker, far more dangerous place. Apocalypse, intending to expand his mutant supremacy from America to the rest of the world, breached the Atlantic sea wall with his forces. A meeting of the remnants of the UN, including Istvan Barath and Lilandra Neramani, came to the realisation that there was only a slim hope for humanity - Remy LeBeau and his X-Men. Remy (with David Haller, who had also attended the meeting), returned to their Muir Island stronghold to consult with Dr. Nathaniel Essex, leader of the mutant resistance, and nineteen-year-old Rachel Kinross-Dayspring, Remy's protegee following the deaths of her parents and now one of the most powerful and skilled X-Men. A secret infiltration of Apocalype's stronghold was planned, with Rachel remaining behind as the last line of defence.
The mission failed, Remy and Rachel's lover, Korvus among the X-Men executed or captured. Rachel, despairing, agreed to an insane plan of Essex's: to travel to another dimension free of Apocalypse's influence. There, she could recruit fighters willing to join her and save their world. Once she assembled a team, she was to find Xorn – the only mutant powerful enough to send them back in order for them to breach New York City, reopen Essex’s lab and activate his lost weapon to destroy Apocalypse.
Still reeling from the Genosha incident and the death of Rachel Kinross, the X-Men, responding to a call from Dum-Dum Dugan about a young psi manifesting in the middle of Madripoor's Low Town, were shocked to discover their maiden in distress was a red-headed girl, obviously well trained in her powers and in combat, calling herself Rachel Kinross-Dayspring. Eventually convinced to return to the mansion with them despite no longer having her telepathy to confirm the truth of what they were telling her, Rachel told her story to Charles and Scott, who agreed to help her in her search for Xorn. Rachel remained at the mansion for a short time before leaving to follow up some leads, unable to settle in a place with so many familiar-yet-strange faces and bad memories.
