Biography
Not much is known about Sarah’s earlier childhood. She was able to get into Stanford University to study genetics. A bright young mind, Sarah was able to gain the attention of Dr. Martine Sutter, at the time a professor at the University. He offered Sarah a place on his team which she accepted. It turned out that the team was to form under Weapon X, to create something even better.
Sarah eventually moved to Alaska and was promoted to Lead Director along with Dr. Zander Rice. She was one of the youngest scientists there but her contributions lead to clones surviving longer, but not enough for a breakthrough. It was Sarah that came up with the idea that the reason the clones weren’t surviving was because they needed a host, a mother. She volunteered herself for the experiment and became pregnant with X-23. It was a success.
The pregnancy was not easy. Sarah had morning sickness, and X-23 moved a lot. But Sarah also started to become attached to the little one growing inside of her. She was shocked to find out that X-23 was going to be a girl; all the previous clones were boys. More testing was done throughout the pregnancy, and nine months later, X-23 was born.
It was eventually agreed upon how X-23 was to be brought up, Sarah would continue with the mother role and contribute to X-23 upbringing and schooling and Zander would take on the father role and would later take on her training. They created an apartment-like house inside the facility where X-23 grew up. Sarah truly saw X-23 as her own daughter and would often come into conflict with Zander on how things should be done. She sought to protect X-23 as much as she could.
She was playing God when she knew she shouldn’t be. When Zander pushed for X-23’s mutants to be triggered, Sarah regrettably allowed it. She felt horrible in the days afterwards because of what her daughter had been through. The guilt she was feeling and her resentment to Zander’s brutality, he didn’t see X-23 as a person but as a weapon. Sarah continued to do what she could for X-23 in her own way and she fell into a false sense of security as things were going her way.
It wasn’t until X-23, who was 16 at the time, came back from a mission that Sarah had no idea she was on did she decide to put her thoughts into action. Furious at Zander for what he was doing, and trying to murder their mentor, she tried to speak reason. But when Zander removed Sarah from the project, stating that he was given the authorization from a higher authority. He re-assigned her to another area so that she couldn’t have access to X-23.
Sarah decided to reach out to the Mutant Underground after some digging and put everything into motion. She was able to get X-23 out and after some complications and close calls, they were safe in a safehouse in Montana. She even gave X-23 a real name, Laura. They stayed there until the end of Summer.
