There were times, Kitty admitted to herself in the dark depths of her soul, when she still felt like the least remarkable graduate to ever leave Xavier's. Of course, being the least remarkable wunderkind out of some of the most successful and brilliant people in the world was not actually something to sneeze at, but Kitty (and her therapist) were still a ways off from that particular self-actualization.

Admitedly, part of the delay was that she'd been rather busy these last couple months "researching" and had had to cancel their last four sessions, and would have to cancel the next two as well, but that was what happened when she got a call from Betsy. Jamie understood, even if her therapist didn't.

"Kathrine, really, we're making such progress. I can't help but worry that you're canceling because there's something you don't want to talk about. Is it your mother again?"

Kitty rolled her eyes. "Dawn, I'm not avoiding you, and I'm not avoiding talking about my mother. I'd be perfectly happy to talk about my mother with you until the cows come home. I'm Jewish, complaining about my mother is as necessary as breathing."

"And I don't understand why we couldn't at least have a phone session while you're on the road."

Because someone's started a dumy-corp which looks dangerously like Mutant Registration and Extermination For Dummies, operating out of the backwaters of eastern Mongolia and I need to find out who the hell is behind it so we can kick their ass into next Tuesday. "Because I need to concentrate on my research, Dawn. I live in a 'publish or perish' world, you know that."

"Yes, but..."

Sighing to herself, Kitty decided she wanted out of this conversation. She was fond of her therapist, she really was, but there were times when she just couldn't take the psychobabble. Glancing around the office for an appropriate excuse, she caught sight of a familiar flash of blonde hair and grinned to herself. "Dawn, hate to cut you off, but a very angry blonde woman has just... practically just appeared in my office, I have to deal with her. She looks like she could take on a demon. I'll call you later, Dawn," she said, running over the woman's protest and shutting the phone off. "'Yana, hi." Kitty grinned. "To what corporote annoyance do I owe the pleasure?"

"What, I can't just come see my best friend out of the goodness of my heart? yeah, ok, I don't think I'd buy that one either. It's just the usual - people are being stupid, and these aren't even ones I can just fire. Come, we will get lunch, and I will complain and you can tell me how much better than these people I am. Oh," Illyana added as an after thought, "I kidnapped my favorite god-daughter from school, too. She's out in the main office harassing your secretary."

"'Yana!"

"Hey, I left a note, Wisdom's got no reason to fuss. I even forged Jamie's signature, so if he does get in a twist he'll do it at him. Come on, I feel like Indian."

Kitty sighed, partly in annoyance but mostly to cover the laugh that was trying to escape. "Fine, but we're going around the corner, not to the subcontinent."

"Of course, of course."
