Biography
Childhood
Megan speaks and writes English and Welsh fluently. She received a good education, even though her family never had a lot of money. She lived with her mother, father and older sister. Megan was never very close to her father, as he worked long and hard hours at the coal mine (and later the coal company office) in order to provide for her family. Her mother was a teacher and a school librarian. But the Gwynn family respected each other, and Megan and her sister got along fairly well.
Both of Megan's parents were older than the average couple when she was born. Megan's father died of lung cancer when Megan was 11 years old. The cancer was caused by years of smoking and working in the coal mines. When Megan was 14, her mother died of a heart attack. Megan also has an older sister (by four years), Molly, who ceased contact with Megan shortly after their mother's death. To this day, Megan has had nearly no contact with her sister.
Early Signs of Manifesting
When Megan was 13, her wings first began to appear. She had ignored the pain in her back, hoping she was going through another growth spurt. At first they were small stubs that couldn't be used for flight. Also she began to get small crops of pixie dust on her skin, but she would always just wash it off and it never seemed to do anything. Megan's family (mother and sister) was initially in shock when her mutant appearance first began to appear, but quickly adopted an attitude that was half acceptance and half just-not-mentioning-it. The next year, when Megan was 14, her mum died. This was especially hard on Megan and her sister. Megan's sister, now 18 years old, moved to London and ceased contact with anyone in Abergylid, including Megan. Assumedly it was too much for her to handle emotionally, so she left and cut off all ties. For almost a year, Megan lived by herself but kept her situation on the down-low. Her older sister was supposed to be her legal guardian, and Megan was careful to not let on that her sister had left.
The Manifesting Event
At age 15 (one month before she joins the story), Megan accidentally overdosed a large population of her town with her pixie dust. What happened was that, while waiting for the train, she read a newspaper expose about her late father's coal mining company knowingly operating the mines in conditions that were unsafe for the workers. According to the article, they had falsified inspection reports for years. This led Megan to believe that her father had had not died simply of smoking-related causes but because of negligence on the company's part. Megan's family had never received compensation for her father's death--according to the expose, the company had directly covered up their actions so they wouldn't have to pay out to the families of the workers.
Megan became so angry that she triggered her mutancy the rest of the way. Dragonfly wings sprang fully from her back, and a thick coating of dust (like pollen) covered her skin. The dust was breathed in by dozens of people who were at the subway station where this event took place.
Authorities seemed content with the explanation that there was a toxic chemical leak near the station that caused the victims to become disoriented and ill.
The event made big news in the UK, and although it wasn't widely heard of in the US, Prof. Xavier noted it and suspected that it may be linked to a mutant. When Prof. Xavier came to Abergylid, he found Megan living alone, with the water and power shut off to her home.
At this point, it became apparent that Megan was living alone with adult supervision. Not only that, but she was no longer trusted among her community (not everyone bought the "toxic chemical leak" explanation). Things became chaotic very quickly. With her sister now living in London, she had nothing left in Abergylid, Wales. Professor Xavier has a fairly easy job of recruiting her. She just needed to sell her house in Abergylid, the details of which she left to her and her sister's attorney they hired to deal with mom's estate, and move to the US.
First year at Xavier's
Megan quickly became friends with some of the girls at her new school including Dori, Catseye, Julian and her roommate Nico. She adjusted to life at school fairly easily and even studied occasionally for her classes. She was getting at least C's with no failing grades for once in her academic career.
In Christmas 2009 she went to Dori's family farm with classmates Nico and Julian. The next spring she participated with the rest of the New Mutants in helping refugees in Pakistan after an earthquake struck.
Then a series of unfortunate events occurred at the school. Upper classman Nick died during the graduation ceremony, striking fear into the hearts of the students. Catseye, not believing he was dead, left the school to go look for him. This also gave Megan an idea. Catseye had always encouraged her to try to contact her sister. After her letter to Molly went unanswered, Megan left the school in July.
The Return
Megan returns to the mansion in late December 2010 and explains that she was unsuccessful in tracking her sister down but does post a collage of the photos she took in England and begins to reconnect with Meggan and the other students and RA's, as she and Yvette talk powers training and school sports on an ice skating trip. She chats with Julian and Artie, later wishing him a happy Dydd Santes Dwynwen, the Welsh version of Valentine's Day.
She meets Molly Hayes in January, following the other girl's arrival and Molly is fascinated by her wings. She begins flying lessons with Warren and strengthens her friendship with Doreen.
In February, Megan explains Gŵyl Fair y Canhwyllau, the Welsh Festival of the Candles, marking the end of winter, and is curious about Groundhog Day. She finds Kevin working on a sculpture in the metal shop and decides to stay for a chat, starting to develop a friendship with him, too. Megan wonders on the journals where her mutant genes came from, showing her tendency to use the journals for more than just communication.
An accident with Megan's pixie-dust leaves Hank hallucinating and reinforcing the need for continuing powers training.
Megan turns 17 and receives a birthday gift from Nico and she continues to develop her friendship with the other girls over the next couple of months.
In April, Megan is caught up in the events of Afterlife. She and Klara meet the ghost of Marcos Delgado, contortionist, in the library; Nico and Matt encounter Esther, a little girl who loves tea parties, in the kitchen and she goes to Marcos' gravesite with Dori and returns a compact mirror he lost;
In June, she, along with the other New Mutants, is caught up in Annalee's empathic web and convinced to go live in the Morlock Tunnels before being dragged out by Sarah Morlocke during the events of My Long Forgotten Son. She later posts a therapeutic debrief of her time in the tunnels.
Megan plays both golf and mini golf with Garrison Kane and Sarah Vale in July, further widening her web of connections in the mansion.
Post-Graduate
Megan graduated from Xavier's in May 2012. She spent the Spring 2013 semester in Hong Kong during a fashion/culture exchange trip through the New York Academy of Art, but she's not enrolled at NYAA. She remains in the New Mutants team. Following an abduction by the powerful demon Belasco, in which she had a part of her soul stolen and replaced with demon magic, her powers began to change. She takes continuing education classes in the form of magical instruction from Amanda Sefton, along with Topaz and Billy.
Her magical prowess was put to the test in August 2014 when Tandy Bowen was possessed by a demon, and Amanda took her students to help rescue her and defeat the demon. She later found herself caught up in the field trip curse when a mutant lost control of his powers at a street art fair and brought all the paintings to life. She made new friends, bonding with Topaz over their magic classes and spending more time with Artie, eventually developing a crush on him. She was upset to find that it wasn't requited, however.
The End
Everything went downhill in January 2015, starting with the destruction of Muir Island and Jean Grey's loss of control. When she was discovered at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, Megan helped to rescue her, and then went with a strike team in order to save her from the Imperial Guard. Megan was later killed defending the mansion when The Dark Phoenix attacked.
Physical Characteristics
Height: 5'2
Weight: 113 lbs.
Eyes: almost completely black (her pupils aren't distinguishable)
Hair: shoulder-length, pink
Other Features: rainbow-colored, translucent dragonfly wings; pierced ears
Clothing: baggy UFO pants or skinny jeans, depending on her mood; baggy hoodies with either punk band logos or her own stenciled designs on them (now that she's more comfortable with her wings, she tends to wear less baggy clothing and is a fan of backless halter tops, which give her wings freedom); stud earrings; wears 1 or 2 necklaces and usually earrings with any given outfit; white chucks that she custom-paints.
Powers
Flying ability. Megan can fly when her wings are uncovered, but she didn't get a lot of practice flying before she came to the school. Her wings are similar to dragonfly wings in structure, with 4 wings in total, and allow her to fly backwards and hover, as well as move totally vertically and horizontally. She cannot glide.
"Pixie dust": Dust that comes off her skin involuntarily and causes hallucinogenic effects to people who breathe it (similar to LSD). Megan's pixie dust ability manifested first when she accidentally overdosed a bunch of people in her Welsh mining town. The dust is like white pollen, and not like glitter.
Pixie Dust effects:
Almost instantly, it causes the victim to become disoriented and causes visual effects like objects moving, swaying, dripping, walls breathing, etc. Often, the person cannot properly gauge how large or small they are in relation to the space they are in. Interior spaces will often shift in size and, outside, perspectives are deceiving. It is not a good idea for the victim to walk around outside on a busy street or drive a vehicle while under the effects of the pixie dust! Also, many victims feel a level of ego-death. They feel a part of everything, and can't tell where they end and the universe begins. This effect varies in intensity from person to person, however. A third common effect is that the victim will usually hallucinate shifting patterns and colors. It is unusual to have a hallucination of say, a completely different place or a person that isn't there. Megan's pixie dust isn't strong enough to cause that level of hallucination.
Effects can also vary based on the victim's resistance and on their emotional state. Someone who is angry or upset is more likely to see disturbing imagery such as patterns of faces, etc. and feel unable to return to their body, while someone in a neutral or happy state is more likely to just be disoriented, confused by the visual effects and mildly euphoric.
The radius of effect is about 6 to 12 feet, depending on air currents. Indoors, it tends to be a lot more potent than outside, where the dust is easily dispersed to a negligible amount.
The effects last 20-30 minutes and take several hours to wear off completely. After 20-30 minutes the victim will stop hallucinating but will still be unable to process information completely correctly. There is nothing that can make it wear off faster except that some people may be more resilient against it than others.
Pixie Dust Control:
Megan at first was not good at controlling the dust - an emotional outburst could trigger it. She received extra training from Laurie in order to control it. The dust at first was only useful as a form of defense, allowing her to escape from danger.
Megan used her dust against enemies in both Carry On and Lakshmibai Raj, but with limited effectiveness. Further training improved its effectiveness and she learned to use her wings to fan the dust toward the target for better concentration and aim.
Megan successfully dusted many soldiers in Genosha, enabling her to escape from the Mutate Lab, confuse enemy soldiers to enable her group to steal a truck - and disable an enemy helicopter pilot while her teammates brought it down. Combined with Laurie's pheromone powers, the dust also successfully tied up Moreau's tentacles by causing them to fight each other. A blast of the combined dust-pheromones to Moreau's face later in the fight was also successful in disorienting him.
Megan never has control over how the dust will affect a particular entity or what they might experience should a hallucination take place.
Pixie Dust as Therapy:
At a mutant awareness rally gone wrong (Times They Are A-Changin'), Pixie was able to use her dust to help calm a FOHer named Nick Chapman. When he manifested grossly exaggerated musculature, Pixie's dust was effective in producing a mildly euphoric state that possibly caused him to relax and possibly transcend the pain.
