The Well Earth Program sponsored by Weston that ultimately
plans to place beneficially gifted mutants in areas of where their gifts
would be the greatest use such as developing countries where they could
provide assistance as well as educate on the need to develop
self-sustaining, green economies. Participants in Well Earth are both
carefully screened volunteers or children born into the program. While the
Well Earth overall mission is not particularly controversial on the surface,
it's the program of cultivating useful mutations through genetic testing and
selective reproduction that is likely to shut down the program if it were
known. The initial volunteers for the program were ones who believed
fervently the case laid out by Weston, and subsequent children and
volunteers have been indoctrinated in the program mission, helped along on
occasion but telepathic reinforcement. Elemental mutations are particularly
prized in the program, as are ones that can be easily aid natural resource
development.
Vestal Gaea Life Home (VGLH) is the primary residence of participants in the Well Earth project and espouses the usual sustainable, green living philosophy as is to be expected.
The Program:
Jane's 'generation' yielded five natural births and two test tube babies. Of the natural births, Jane was undesirable (expected to be a rain bringer, or some other variety of weather witch,) one was Lula (desirable,) one has some strength abilities (mildly desirable,) one can vanish into thin air (undesirable,) and one didn't exhibit any mutation. Of the IVF babies, One exhibited a viable healing mutation, the other one can talk to squirrels and is largely deemed undesirable. Currently there are a dozen children who have yet to mutate, and it is hoped that they are a bit more desirable than the previous generation.
The commune participants are not under strong telepathic influence, as most of the 'adults' came into the program as willing environmental zealots, and are sent out into the field for years at a time when not at the commune raising their children. (Often one parent will be in the field while the other remains at home, and they will switch off as needed.) They really want to Do Good. The telepaths do serve to bolster this mentality amongst the younger set, and quell rebellion among the teens. Mostly they stay on site at New Hope to help protect its more controversial uses unless needed at VGLH or Nascor. Undesirable mutations are encouraged to stay with the program and are offered the opportunity to be educated in whatever profession (law, pr, medicine, education,) that can be utilized.
The Well Earth Summit:
The Summit is an event that effectively is used to present The Well Earth five-year-plan, and members are pulled in from the field for that regardless of where they are or what they're doing.
