Plot Summary
Ryker's Island, the prison off-shore of Manhattan, is gripped by a riot that involves hostage taking and protests over conditions. While law enforcement negotiates. a bit of intel makes it to the mansion from the Maggia of all places that the riot has been coordinated from outside, diverting attention from the maximum security side of Ryker's where several super-powered villains are incarcerated.
A group of men, organized under the Hood, makes an assault on the high security area of Ryker's Island to try and free a number of super-powered prisoners. The Hood sees their numbers as the way to increase the power of his syndicate over the Maggia.
The X-Men arrive to attempt to thwart the break-out, but suddenly find themselves fighting both the Hood's men and another body of super-powered people. Confusion reigns as they break down into small battles before Garrison Kane and Thor see each other. They quickly broker a truce to finish off the Hood's attempt, forcing him to flee.
In the aftermath, the new team is introduced as the Avengers; SHIELD's response to the mass mutant catastrophe of the month prior. The X-Men are thanked for their help, but the message they are given is clear; the Avengers are law enforcement's solution to super-powered crime and terrorism, and if the X-Men get in the way, they will be treated as criminal vigilantes.
