Plot Summary

In late September, New Dawn holds an exhibition in New York's Central Park. There are talks given on the movement's activities and way of life, demonstrations by New Dawn artisans, that sort of thing. Angelo, who's heard of New Dawn prior to this thanks to his work with Elpis, decides to take a small group of students to the event. Tatiana comes out of genuine interest, while Noriko and Karolina are hoping to slip away and get into mischief. Callisto, who had been planning to spend the day in New York, agrees to drop them off and pick them up.

After enjoying the event for several hours, they attend Machado's talk that evening, joined by Callisto (who's reappeared a bit earlier than expected). Her enhanced senses allow her to pick up on suspicious movement in the woods, and even as she warns Angelo, an energy blast from that direction barely misses Machado. It doesn't miss some of the bystanders, and the crowd panics, scattering and trying to take cover. This involves heading out of the open and into the woods, which complicates the situation.

The Xavier's group gets separated in the chaos. Angelo calls the mansion for help, then works on finding the girls. In the process, he comes across Machado, and convinces her to stick with him.

Tat manages to link up with Angelo and Machado. They also encounter one of the assassins, who is a young mutant around the age of fifteen and have to flee to protect Machado. Karolina, is visibly glowing and Noriko is startled into making visible use of her powers, and get targeted by another of the team of assassins - again, a young mutant in his mid-teens - as a potential threat. Callisto makes a timely reappearance and is able to help them out. The five eventually manage to find each other in the woods, and focus on staying together and ahead of the 'bad guys' for long enough for the team to get there. This is obviously happening in one of the areas of the park where it's possible to get 'lost' for that long (the Ramble or North Woods).

Given the lack of notice, the team deployed is very small. They're dropped from the Blackbird (token pilot to be determined) under cover of fog provided from Ororo, who also gets herself to the ground while Jean takes care of that for Scott and Cain. Ororo continues to provide cover with the weather as they track down Angelo and the others, while remaining ahead of the police (who have arrived by then).

Jean, in an encounter with the young assassins (who turn out to be a team of four), finds a moment for a telepathic scan. She establishes that their minds have been psionically manipulated to an extent she's never before seen, to the point where they seem almost non-human. Cain, meanwhile, is very disturbed by finding himself in a combat situation with 'kids' - one of his personal buttons, after the incident with Siena Blaze.

After what can best be described as a running scuffle, they get to Angelo's group first, only to discover that they've been joined by more civilians. One of the young assassins makes another attempt to kill Machado and Scott attempts a non-lethal counter with an optic blast. But he's hit from behind and the optic blast goes in an unintended direction, seriously injuring the young mutant; it's a fluke accident, one of 'those things' that sometimes happens in combat. The other three young mutants retreat.

The Blackbird makes another quick approach, and Jean TK-lifts herself, Cain (to make the group that remains behind less conspicuous), Machado and the injured assassin aboard. On the way back to the mansion, she tries and fails to save the kid's life. Scott, Ororo and Angelo escort the rest of the group safely out of the park, dodging any conversations with the police. Callisto winds up driving home after all, just with two extra passengers in the car.

Back at the mansion, in the aftermath, Machado is grateful for the rescue, but is saddened rather than disturbed by the youth of her attackers. Jean suspects she may know more than she's saying, but Charles merely urges the woman to keep in touch.

The age of the attackers, their obvious military training, and what was done to their minds start raising other questions, given the events of Seven Minutes. Nathan asks Jean to check the body for any unusual markings; she does, and finds a small alpha-omega tattoo, identical to the ones given to new Mistra operatives. The obvious connection is made, as is a call to Nick Fury, who sends someone out to collect the body and debrief the team.
