Plot Summary
A routine trip to pick up a new student took a turn for the unexpected when Scott and Terry discovered the young girl, Miriam Cross, had attempted suicide upon learning she was to be sent to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Miriam's mutation had given her accentuated hearing, and she had overheard her parents discussing the school as a place she would be 'cured' of her mutation. Frightened and desperate, she had taken an overdose of sleeping pills and was found by her younger brother, Daniel.
Whilst Scott talked to Miriam's distraught mother, Terry encountered Daniel and discovered the truth behind Miriam's actions. It was decided that the best thing would be to not push things Xavier's-wise, and as they were leaving, Scott caught sight of Miriam, and was disturbed to see that her eyelids had grown over. In the wake of the loss of his eye, Scott was shaken by the girl's blindness. Upon returning to the school, he spoke to Charles and then Jean about his reaction. His own feelings of helplessness and anger and frustration over his injury came to the fore, and the incident proved to be something of a turning point in his eventual recovery.
