Topaz looked him over for a moment, expression unreadable as she tried to decide if she wanted to be kind and leave him in his self-deprecation, or be an arsehole. She chose the latter. "I'm pretty sure everyone thinks they're not worth saving, or worth the trouble they cause other people. But other people are still going to save you anyway because they think you're worth it for whatever reason, and your opinion on the subject doesn't actually matter. So whatever you think of yourself... you're probably the only one." It was like having a glass of ice water tossed in his face, which had probably been the desired effect. Topaz appeared to be just as uncomfortable dealing with emotions as Marius was in expressing them. This might have seemed counterintuitive from an empath unless, like Marius, you had actually spoken to one for any length of time. His chuckle was awkward but genuine. He couldn't fault the direct approach. "Well. I am the only one who really knows me, eh? And you, too, I suppose." He folded his arms across his scarified chest and turned his amber eyes towards the tiles. "Be that as it may . . . less awkward for us both to pretend that's not so, I think." "Sure," Topaz agreed easily. "As long as I don't think you're going to try something stupid at any given moment. I have no issues with passing the problem on to someone who cares more about your well being than they do about not having these types of conversations." "Ah, then you're in luck, because Kyle has already appointed himself my chaperone in such matters. Though if the expulsion of his duties depends upon an assurance my judgement shall henceforth be sound and reasoned we may have a fundamental conflict of expectation." A thought occurred to him. Marius let his arms drop and thick brows knit. "Why'd you come here, anyway?" Topaz shrugged. "Like I said - I want to apologize for impaling you, and violating all your mental boundaries. It's a bit rude no matter what the situation calls for." Marius looked this way and that, as if checking to see whether he'd missed something. "Propriety? That's all?" She leaned against the wall behind her now, still looking at Marius even if he wouldn't meet her gaze, and considered her answer for a moment. She knew far too much about what was in his head. It was only fair, she supposed. "Magic and empathy are... psi powers in general are extremely morally grey just because they're so easy to abuse and use against people. When magic is used the wrong way, it can turn you into a monster. As far as I know, I'm the only person who uses both, together. I'm not self-centered enough to think I'm the only person in the entire world who's combined the two, but it's a lot less common than, say, traditional magic or earth magic or even chaos magic. Sometimes it feels like I'm making up the rules as I go. And if I'm the only one who knows the rules, I'm the only one who can police myself and make sure I don't cross a line. And part of that is making sure I never get too comfortable with the things I have to do, no matter how necessary they are. Stabbing you and invading your privacy to the deepest extent possible was necessary, but it's not something I ever want to repeat. And if I ever reach a point where I don't feel that way... then I know I have a problem." Emotional acuity had never numbered among Marius' strengths. He had, in fact, often been told it was a borderline deficit. But something in Topaz's tone told him that this was not information she parted with easily, and that realisation was almost startling. "Don't understand magic," Marius said, a little haltingly, "but lines you don't cross, that you hang onto, white-knuckled, even when the why stops making sense . . . especially when the why stops making sense, because the world is so often senseless . . . that I know." He curled the fingers of one hand, tracing a ring finger around the rima oris of one palm. "That I do know." "I thought you might." Topaz's tone was just a little softer now, almost unnoticeable. "But that's all I wanted to say. Try not to be too stupid. There are people who would care if something happened to you." Today in XProject: May 11 PHASE 1 2003: Jean and Ororo take the students on a field trip to the Museum of Natural History. 2004: Amanda gives Betsy a birthday present. Nathan talks to Moira about furthering his powers training, and Amanda and Angelo talk about the future of their friendship. Angelo also catches up with Marie, and has a deep talk with Jane, who gets comfort from Bobby. 2005: Remy asks Betsy to work for him on mansion security. Buy Now, Pay Later: Remy and Amanda meet Charlie Plunder for the first time. Remy tells Lorna he’s not going to the wedding because he needs to investigate a tie between Magneto, Denver and drugs; Jake finds out he’ll be missing the wedding to help Remy investigate. 2006: Pete’s new team gets a place to set up office. 2007: Ahab (plot): Nathan and Angelo discuss methods to deal with things; Pete gets a lead, and Nathan and Ororo follow it up to a broker who deals in mercenaries; Nathan passes on the names of the potential mercenaries to Pete; the staff organise laser tag in the Danger Room; Gorgeous George, one of the mercenaries, watches the Hounds being fed and begins to have doubts. Yvette and Jan talk about the X-Men. Mondo and Garrison discuss being helpless and ways to cope. 2008: Mother's Day - Jay sends flowers to his mother, like most of the rest of the clan. Jay breaks up with Kevin for his own sanity; Kevin asks Jennie out for waffles and relationship talk. Bedlam: Amanda continues to wander the streets of London. 2009: Jay goes to the West Coast Annex to talk to Kevin and whatever remnants of their friendship are destroyed by the altercation they have; calling Jean-Paul for help half-way back, Jay tells him what happened; Jean-Paul texts Scott, Jean and Jake to let them know where he is. Manuel takes Callie for lunch and he suggests she ask Fred to be her date for the prom. Nathan and Domino give Jake the Talk. Angel becomes a trainee and the naming thread happens; Kyle asks Julio what "Empanada" means as Jennie is suggesting it as a name. 2010: Laura gets her cast off. Kyle awakens from his coma. Jean-Paul gets food delivered to Kyle's suite. Jubilee stops by Remy's apartment to drop off a package and discovers Ororo instead. 2011: X-Men Mission: Roller Derby Queen: The X-Men find a surprise waiting for them at the tournament location; Garrison tells the team that Arcade is present; Callisto and Kurt go looking for information once the match begins; Marius finds himself in an uncomfortable place while trying to sell their cover story; the X-Men come out for their first real match. Operation: зимний солдат: Doug makes a post to Snow Valley about Wade checking out, and about North missing two consecutive check-ins. Callie stops by Jean-Paul's apartment to bribe him into helping her and Amara move. Julian e-mails Jean about leaving for a few days, despite being grounded; Doug encounters a surly Julian in the Hellfire Club and takes him under his wing. 2012: Nico sends Lorna this, framed. Clarice posts in her journal saying she is getting her flashdance on. North visits Vanessa late at night and meets Adrienne under unusual circumstances. 2013: 2014: PHASE 2 2015: Amanda and Bobbi meet in District X while conducting their own separate rounds. 2016: Reed and Hank have a manly chat about their relationships and sex lives... or lack thereof. Jessica makes an FML post, as the kids say. 2017: Warren calls Hope A. to tell her about how the deal between Worthington Industries and Regal Crest Trading went down. 2018: Maya is annoyed Brooklyn Nine-Nine was (briefly) canceled. Angel posts about Amadeus leaving for Muir Island. Generation X: Demon Bear: The kids get to school, and find out there was some vandalizing; through the day, they have weird and terrifying encounters; while talking, Maya sees a girl who disappeared earlier in the day, only for her to disappear again; Nica, Miles, and Xavin arrive at school to meet the kids for a movie, and the world turns upside down; Miles, Nica, and Clea are separated from everyone else; the rest realize something weird is going on; Angel posts about the GPS on the kids’ phones going crazy; Alex, Darcy, Megan, and Julian go to the school to find out what’s going on, and get caught up in the weirdness; more missing, more finding; Nica and Clea find the adults who came to look for them, as well as Rahne; Jean-Phillipe posts about the group that went to the school also falling out of touch; Molly, Meggan, Jean-Phillipe, and Sharon F.arrive at the school and begin investigating; Darcy, Megan, Nica, and Clea find Sharon F., Molly and Megan; all the groups finally reunite, and a plan is set to go at the bear; they have their final encounter with the bear, finally taking it down; Alex, Julian, and Jean-Phillipe find the missing girl, who has no memory of what happened, and bring her to the hospital. Miles complains to Gabriel about ending up in another world. Ty kidnaps Topaz to bring her home for a good old-fashioned Mother's Day with his parents. Topaz asks for someone to feed her cat for the weekend, as Ty has kidnapped her. 2019: Fear in the Dark: Alex, Arthur, and Bobbi talk to a distraught woman worried about her missing boyfriend; Lorna recognizes the boyfriend's name - Cain Marko - and emails Scott and Garrison about it. 2020: 2021: Darcy posts a question from Twitter, asking if on a date with a person which book would make you leave immediately. 2022: Maya and Pyotr meet in the mansion's gym and nothing explodes. Clint posts an update to eXcalibur about tech and wormhole duties. Felicia shares an Instagram story noting that people can buy their own damn flowers. Matt shares an image reminding people to mind their written communication, for legal reasons. Clarice posts an embroidery that she’ll be hanging on her door. Following meeting Maya, Pyotr texts April to ask what “Starfleet” is. Kyle shares a knock knock joke one of his students told him. 2023: Maya is deeply unimpressed with Tik Tokkers teaching incorrect ASL. Jean-Phillipe encourages everyone to celebrate Eurovision with himself and Marie-Ange. Clarice announces it’s time for CPR recertification. Terry and Arthur have a typical morning discussion in the suite he shares with Kyle - right up until something slightly unusual happens.
