The Massachusetts Academy was a prestigious private educational institution, located in Snow Valley, Massachusetts. Catering to the social elite, the school prided itself on developing character in its students to prepare them for the changing world of the future. While not a mutant-specific institution, the Academy had a high number of mutant students, notably due to the influence of its headmistress, Emma Frost.
Under the guidance of Ms. Frost, a group of mutant students calling themselves the Hellions formed a pro-mutant vigilante group, performing small missions to disrupt and harass groups that would seek to harm mutants or advance the causes of anti-mutant politics.
In early 2002, however, the Academy would fall victim to an attack by a mutant-hunting Sentinel robot, commanded by Donald Pierce, a former colleague of Emma's with a thirst for revenge. In the ensuing attack, the entire student body present was killed, the Academy itself destroyed, and Emma Frost left in a brief coma.
Most of the students in the Academy's care that were killed in the assault are buried in Snow Valley, in a cemetery not far from where the school stood. Both Emma Frost and Haroun al-Rashid, one of the few surviving students, make regular pilgrimages to memorialize those lost.
In May 2006, the Snow Valley Memorial Center for Mutant Affairs was founded in memory of the Academy and its students, and is currently the operating base for X-Force.
