Following the engagement part of Medusa Amaquelin and Blackagar Boltagon, the world was stunned to see the entire island nation disappear without a trace. Or almost - the wreckage of the royal plane was found, with the bodies of the King and Queen, Medusa and Crystal Amaquelin's parents, and various Attilani dignitaries. For weeks, the question on everyone's lips was - what happened to Attilan, and by extension, those remaining on the island after the party, such as the Amaquelin sisters and Forge?

The truth was Maximus Boltagon, younger brother of the Crown Prince and quite insane, had finally acted on his desire to become Attilan's ruler. For years he had seemed without a mutant power, but in reality he was a telepath, and with the help of Fabian Cortez, he successfully used that power to control the mind of his young cousin, Crystal. When her out of character behaviour prompted concern from Medusa, Boltagon went searching for her, discovering her at the airport and attempting to use her Cortez-amplified powers to crash the royal plane, the very same plane Medusa and Blackagar were meant to be on. He was too late to stop her, and the plane crashed and he had to use his own powers to stop her. But then something happened that no-one expected - a near-miss from wreckage from the plane caused a local teleporter's powers to just out of control, teleporting the entire island into another dimension.

At the heart of the plan was a two-pronged attack against the students, using them as hostages to the co-operation of the rest. With the safety of the Las Vegas group unconfirmed, the X-Men had no choice but to comply, only to be double-crossed at the last minute as they were told Amanda was not Xavier's staff, and therefore not part of the bargain. Two years passed on the island, cut off from all contact with the outside world. with Forge had to adjust to life as a refugee, eventually becoming an Attilani citizen, and Crystal and Medusa found themselves taking on new roles as two of the only surviving members of the royal family. Medusa was married and became Queen, and Crystal became a teacher in a newly-founded school for mutants, based on Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. A powers accident involving Wanda Maximoff, Amanda Sefton and Illyana Rasputin solved the mystery of what had happened, as the young Russian teleporter found herself in Attilan, and was given a message by Crystal to take back to those mourning their deaths. Hope of their eventual return was born.

Amanda, meanwhile, had been taken to Louisiana, and Candra's stronghold. Research led Wanda Maximoff and Illyana Rasputin to conclude she was to be used as part of the ritual to raise Selene, necessitating a combined strike with the X-Men - the X-Men would infiltrate the ceremony in New York with the magic stones, and X-Force would retrieve their missing team-mate. The plan went off without a hitch, aided by the escape from Murderworld of the Las Vegas group, breaking into various groups to help each other survive. The ritual disrupted, the cult - led by Karl Mordo and the insane Dr. Peter Alarune from Nova Roma - threatened the X-Men with vengeance, only to be arrested by the FBI for theft of historical artifacts: the stones had been registered as historical pieces by Charles Xavier.

Thoughts of what Maximus had done to her and the desire for justice remained, however, and the younger Amaquelin slipped away to search for him. Her search eventually proved fruitful when she found him at the bedside of a young boy in a coma - acting on her own, Crystal captured him and locked him up for several days until he confessed to what he had done and revealed the coma patient was the person responsible for their exile. With Maximus no longer using his powers to maintain the coma, the boy eventually awoke and returned the island to its correct place. What had been two and a half years on Attilan, however, was only six weeks on Earth, and various adjustments needed to be made.

Things turned bloody in Louisiana, with X-Force making no quarter with their foes. Amanda was discovered to have been tortured, her back sliced up as part of the ritual, and very few survived the group's wrath. Candra's death was a temporary respite only, however, as her magical powers mean than she has been reborn and may again surface to trouble the team, in whatever incarnation they might be.

Voodoo Child: Selene's cult finally returned with a sprawling plan in which to get back their property to revive Selene, as well as punishing them for their actions against her. Masterminded by Selene's former student, Candra, the plot struck at the school, the X-Men and X-Force simultaneously, their very survival in doubt.

At the heart of the plan was a two-pronged attack against the students, using them as hostages to the co-operation of the rest. A field trip to Las Vegas was captured and placed in Arcade's Murderworld, and the regular bus run driven by Amanda Sefton was ambushed, the participants taken. In exchange for the bus run students and staff, the cult - who had joined forces with Belladonna Boudreaux-LeBeau - demanded the return of the mystical stones taken from Nova Roma the previous year. With the safety of the Las Vegas group unconfirmed, the X-Men had no choice but to comply, only to be double-crossed at the last minute as they were told Amanda was not Xavier's staff, and therefore not part of the bargain. The students (and Dani) were safe, having already escaped, and Angelo Espinosa was handed over, badly beaten for his resistance.
