Details
The Maggia was an international crime syndicate that originated around the 13th century in southern Europe (mostly Italy) which expanded throughout Europe and the Americas. They have dueled with the Sicilian based Mafia for centuries for control of Europe’s organized crime and that battle eventually made it to the new world. After several particularly bloody confrontations in the 20s and 30s, they eventually worked out an ’understanding’ with the Mafia, carving up various territories and illegal activities between them. Although the arrangement still holds, both groups regularly probe for weaknesses to exploit.
In the United States the Maggia primarily controls loan-sharking, illegal gambling, and smuggling contraband and narcotics. Protection rackets and prostitution are also very important to the Maggia. During the 60s and 70s, the Maggia tracked the Mafia’s expansion in Las Vegas carefully and invested significant amounts in entertainment depicting them. As a result, the Mafia became a household name for organized crime and the focus of the FBI and Congress, while they were able to remain relatively obscure.
The Maggia are not a monolithic organization, instead it consists of many "families", all of which are independent of each other. They usually didn't cooperate much less coordinate with each other, though they normally agreed not to interfere with each other. Currently, the Maggia is broken into five groups – the Old World Maggia, who control all activity in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East – the Maggia Orient, the smallest of the Maggia groups, which operates from Madripoor – the New World Maggia, which controls South America and parts of the Caribbean – the East Coast Maggia, who controls the US from the east coast to St. Louis – and finally the West Coast Maggia, which is currently suffering from intense losses in California and the southwest due to an ongoing war with Mexican cartels.
Traditionally, each Maggia group is governed by a ‘Commission’; a group of representatives from each of the major families in the area. Currently, due to losses, the West Coast Maggia does not have a working Commission in place and both the Old World and East Coast Maggia are maneuvering to seize control of the territory.
The East Coast Maggia is controlled by five families:
· Manfredi Family
· Nefaria Family
· Berruti Family
· Karnelli Family
· Libris Family
