Biography

Childhood

Mondo is from American Samoa. He grew up in the arms of a very extended family - mother, father, three brothers, four sisters, and a small army of cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. They all lived in one large house in the more rural parts of Samoa. Growing up he did what he was told, made friends with everyone, laughed and played when he could, worked when he had to, and was generally no different from anyone else in his age-group. All of that changed at thirteen when, while swimming in the Pacific with his brothers, sisters, and cousins a tiger shark decided to investigate all the splashing about. Most of his family got out of the water in a flash - sharks are not an unknown quantity in Samoa, but his young female cousin got a leg cramp and couldn't make it out. Mondo, without hesitation, jumped back into the water and drove the shark off. It tried to bite him, but a sudden surge from deep within him wrapped itself around the steel necklace his mother gave him for his birthday and gave him strength enough to drive the shark off - with a broken jaw. He had no idea he was a mutant, nor did anyone else around him.

Growing up, Mondo had always been a very physical boy and at best an indifferent student. Wrestling was his sport of choice - Samoa has a long and historied tradition of producing excellent wrestlers. When he was sixteen he won an opportunity to train in the prestigious Kokonoe-beya Sumo school. He packed his relatively few things, kissed all his relatives goodbye, and boarded a plane for the first time in his life to fly to Japan.

His time spent in Japan was a cold, wet, and quite difficult time in his life. He knew no one, spoke no Japanese, and as the most junior member of the school he was assigned all of the nasty jobs no one else wanted. He did them with a smile, though, proud to just be there and to be given the opportunity to train in the art he loved. The youngest wrestlers were assigned a training partner from the older boys in the school, and Mondo's was an American boy from Hawaii named James. James refined Mondo's rudimentary English into something acceptable, and also taught him enough Japanese to get by. The two boys were both friendly outgoing sorts, and spent much of what little free time they possessed exploring the Japanese countryside. James and Mondo spent a year and a half in the Sumo dojo until tragedy struck. In a training bout before the head instructor himself Mondo was thrown to the clay in such a way that the tendons in his right knee tore. Worst of all that the bout he was competing in was to determine which of the young students was qualified to step up to senior student status, and given the nature of his injury he was looking at six months of surgery and rehab before he could even _think_ about competing again. His sumo career over before it really began, Mondo bid James and the rest of the school goodbye and had the surgical reconstruction of his knee done.

Living At The X-Mansion

Due to some difficulties with the surgery, Dr. Moira MacTaggart was consulted and confirmed that Mondo was in fact a mutant. It was through her connection to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters that an invitation came from Charles Xavier for Mondo to come to the school and learn more about his mutation whilst he recovered from the surgery. Mondo eagerly accepted, enthusiastic as always about a new experience.

Since his arrival, Mondo has attempted to assimilate to the American way of life, however the strangeness of the country and the school itself have proved daunting even to his good humour. He had a few friends among the student body - namely fellow immigrant Yvette Petrovic - and was working with Forge on quantifying his powers, as well as voluntering with Red X. He was homesick, however, and misses his family more and more. Things came to a head when, in relatively quick succession, he was involved in two ill-fated field trips. The first was attacked by dinosaurs and in Las Vegas the entire group was captured and put into Murderworld. In both cases Mondo exhibited a violence and anger that contradicted his normally-sunny demeanour, defending his friends.

Upon the advent of summer vacation, it was decided the best thing for Mondo would be to spend some time back at home in Samoa. He did so well there, it was considered better for his psychological recovery that he remain.

Powers

Mondo is a mimetic shapeshifter. He can synch his body's properties to the properties of any piece of matter in direct contact with his skin. He will ONLY be able to synch to solids - not liquids, not gasses, not plasmas or any of the more exotic states of matter. His limitation to solids is a psychological defense mechanism - his power permits synching to any state of matter, but the chance of not being able to return to "normal" is too high to risk. And in the case of non-solid states of matter, there's always a chance of a section of his body not being in contact with the main mass when the synch is dissolved. If that were to happen, Mondo would suffer immediate, potentially fatal injury as his body reformed without the missing material. With solids, there is no danger of that happening.

Mondo's mutation cannot and never will be able to synch to an energy field of any type.

He alters the properties of his own flesh to match the properties of the matter being synched to. If he synchs to steel, his flesh becomes as solid as steel and as flexible as steel. If he synchs to concrete he'll take on the density and solidity of concrete.

Short-term, he is limited to the most simple forms of matter - he finds non-complicated elements the easiest to synch up to. The more complicated the molecule, the more difficult to synch his body to its structure. He has practice synching to stone and wood, as those materials were in easy supply in Samoa and in Japan. Synching to rice-paper disagreed with him - he intensely disliked feeling that flimsy. He also needs practice in not using his hands and feet only to synch to materials - he's developed a bad habit of having to fondle the material in question with his hands or walking on it with bare feet in order to synch with it.

Equipment

A necklace with a stainless steel pendant, which he uses to synch to.
