| Wolfcub: Nicholas Gleason and his younger sister were orphaned in his teens when their family were attacked and their house burned down by the Friends of Humanity. Leaving his sister at a police station to be cared for, the young werewolf/shapeshifter fled into the wilderness, convinced he was a danger to all those who might care for him. A failed suicide attempt saw him brought to a hospital in north Illinois, where Nathaniel Essex observed the young mutant turning into a wolf and arranged for him to become a student at Xavier's. Nick found the school to be exactly the place he needed, finding friends, a rival in the shape of Julian Keller, a girlfriend in the cat-like Sharon Smith and, in the form of Kurt Sefton and his siblings, a new family as the German teacher eventually adopted him. Disaster struck again, however, when his sister, now a member of the Purifiers, assisted in an attack on the school's graduation by the Reavers. Nick was severely injured saving Julian's life during the melee and disappeared for nine months. He was eventually found, completely amnesiac, by Kurt and Julian in New York. "John", as Nick was calling himself, was convinced to return to Xavier's in the hope familiar surroundings would help his memories and true identity return, but when that failed, he accepted a suggestion he work at Muir Island as an intern. Without the pressures of trying to regain his previous identity, "John" may very well remember who he is - or create a new life.
