Biography
Childhood
Tatiana grew up in a small apartment in the Bronx with her mother, her sister, her slew of pets, and her mother's line of boyfriends. She started working as soon as she could at her mother's insistence, from the bodega around the corner to the job that she loved - working at the local vet office. Her wages going to her mother, Tat grew up quickly. She worked three jobs while going to school, and after middle school she went to a vocational high school instead of college prep at her mother's bidding.
She never really fit in at school, because she wasn't concerned with gossip and boys - she was too busy working to really let herself make friends.
On her way to school one morning, she saw a man who'd hit a dog with his car. Tatiana had, of course, stopped to help in any way she could - stabilizing the dog so the man could take him to the vet office where she worked. She rushed to school, now late - her clothes spattered with the dog's blood. Tat changed shape into a half-human, half-canine not long after. Ruled by instinct of the animal she'd transformed into, Tatiana ran - only to be attacked by several vocal anti-mutants who were around the neighborhood. On the run, she was cornered and was shifting back when she saw an alley cat - she killed it out of desperation. Tatiana used her new form and increased agility to escape, half climbing up the side of a building with her claws. Filled with self-loathing for what she'd done, and terrified she'd have to do it again, she promised herself she wouldn't kill another animal, and she was certain that she could live in hiding, and no one would know she was a mutant.
After being thrown out by her mother, Tatiana left home - afraid to see the people in her neighborhood, she headed north, working odd jobs to keep herself fed. She'd managed two months on her own, and even though she was often hungry, she made do.
Rescue and Aftermath
Things unravelled, however, when a powers accident at the diner she was working in illegally resulted in her being pursued by the locals. Having absorbed the abilities and instincts of a rat, she lashed out when cornered, injuring one of the men. Fortunately she was rescued by the X-Men, Charles Xavier having been alerted to her presence and need for somewhere to go. Tatiana was confused and suspicious at first, staying at the mansion only reluctantly on a 'temporary' basis. Despite herself, she found herself forming attachments, especially with Nathan Dayspring and her roommates, and she gradually began to relax. Always concerned with paying her way, however, she took on a cleaning job for Monet St. Croix and Clarice Ferguson.
Tatiana progressed in many areas, but steadfastly refused to acknowledge the nature of or use her powers. Several incidents upset this stance - Jennie Stavros spilling the beans on the journals, the truth-telling incident involving a sports drink and an incident during a Red X mission in which she was helping evacuate some cattle. Stubborn to the end, she continued to refuse to discuss her powers issues. When Apocalypse invaded New York, she was part of the New Mutants group stranded in the city. While she was able to assist her team mates in surviving the incident, it left her shaken and withdrawn.
In July 2009, Tatiana decided to expand her horizons, transferring to the mutant school on Attilan to continue her education in a safer environment than New York had proven to be. It is hoped that being in a place where mutants are not only tolerated but encouraged will help with Tatiana's denial of her powers.

Powers
Tatiana's mutation is the ability to take on the characteristics of an animal by coming into contact with its blood. The changes are both physical and mental, with sensory changes coming first, and then both biological and cosmetic changes following. With Tatiana's mutation, her skeletal structure adjusts to mimic the bone structures found in the blood she has come into contact with. She also grows vestigial limbs, such as ears and tails when appropriate to the blood type, and while she is changing, her skin also transforms to echo the animal. The speed and duration of the change are directly proportional to the amount of blood she comes in contact with, however the severity of the change is the same regardless.
While changing does affect Tatiana's physical traits, the increased attributes vary from animal to animal; her mutation takes the form of the animal the blood is from, not the species of animal the blood is from. Along with both increased and decreased attributes, Tatiana also experiences mental changes. While she does retain enough mental clarity that she can still speak, her instincts and some of her finer social skills are adjusted to coincide with the animal in question.
Ingesting animal blood is not an issue, so long as it comes only in contact with the inside of her mouth. Dried blood and cooked meat are not activators.
