Topaz looked him over for a moment, expression unreadable as she tried to decide if she wanted to be kind and leave him in his self-deprecation, or be an arsehole. She chose the latter. "I'm pretty sure everyone thinks they're not worth saving, or worth the trouble they cause other people. But other people are still going to save you anyway because they think you're worth it for whatever reason, and your opinion on the subject doesn't actually matter. So whatever you think of yourself... you're probably the only one." It was like having a glass of ice water tossed in his face, which had probably been the desired effect. Topaz appeared to be just as uncomfortable dealing with emotions as Marius was in expressing them. This might have seemed counterintuitive from an empath unless, like Marius, you had actually spoken to one for any length of time. His chuckle was awkward but genuine. He couldn't fault the direct approach. "Well. I am the only one who really knows me, eh? And you, too, I suppose." He folded his arms across his scarified chest and turned his amber eyes towards the tiles. "Be that as it may . . . less awkward for us both to pretend that's not so, I think." "Sure," Topaz agreed easily. "As long as I don't think you're going to try something stupid at any given moment. I have no issues with passing the problem on to someone who cares more about your well being than they do about not having these types of conversations." "Ah, then you're in luck, because Kyle has already appointed himself my chaperone in such matters. Though if the expulsion of his duties depends upon an assurance my judgement shall henceforth be sound and reasoned we may have a fundamental conflict of expectation." A thought occurred to him. Marius let his arms drop and thick brows knit. "Why'd you come here, anyway?" Topaz shrugged. "Like I said - I want to apologize for impaling you, and violating all your mental boundaries. It's a bit rude no matter what the situation calls for." Marius looked this way and that, as if checking to see whether he'd missed something. "Propriety? That's all?" She leaned against the wall behind her now, still looking at Marius even if he wouldn't meet her gaze, and considered her answer for a moment. She knew far too much about what was in his head. It was only fair, she supposed. "Magic and empathy are... psi powers in general are extremely morally grey just because they're so easy to abuse and use against people. When magic is used the wrong way, it can turn you into a monster. As far as I know, I'm the only person who uses both, together. I'm not self-centered enough to think I'm the only person in the entire world who's combined the two, but it's a lot less common than, say, traditional magic or earth magic or even chaos magic. Sometimes it feels like I'm making up the rules as I go. And if I'm the only one who knows the rules, I'm the only one who can police myself and make sure I don't cross a line. And part of that is making sure I never get too comfortable with the things I have to do, no matter how necessary they are. Stabbing you and invading your privacy to the deepest extent possible was necessary, but it's not something I ever want to repeat. And if I ever reach a point where I don't feel that way... then I know I have a problem." Emotional acuity had never numbered among Marius' strengths. He had, in fact, often been told it was a borderline deficit. But something in Topaz's tone told him that this was not information she parted with easily, and that realisation was almost startling. "Don't understand magic," Marius said, a little haltingly, "but lines you don't cross, that you hang onto, white-knuckled, even when the why stops making sense . . . especially when the why stops making sense, because the world is so often senseless . . . that I know." He curled the fingers of one hand, tracing a ring finger around the rima oris of one palm. "That I do know." "I thought you might." Topaz's tone was just a little softer now, almost unnoticeable. "But that's all I wanted to say. Try not to be too stupid. There are people who would care if something happened to you." Today in XProject: May 12 PHASE 1 2003: 2004: Angelo spars with Nathan, and Jamie and Illyana rekindle their friendship. 2005: Meggan gets her first swim lesson at the pool from Dani. 2006: Several important Talks are had – one between Nate and Lorna, one between Nate and Amanda and one between Amanda and Pete. 2007: Ahab (plot) - Pete recognises one of the names and calls his old acquaintance, 'Gorgeous George' to discover a ready-made double agent as he is prepared to give Ahab up; Pete notifies Snow Valley of what he's found; the X-Men leaders plot strategy and sound the alert; Nathan prepares an explosive for George's role in the plan; the X-Men go in ; a lucksnap breaks the mental conditioning of the Hounds and they attack Ahab and the Nasty Boys instead; the X-Men have to tranq their students to bring them back; Kyle bites off Ahab's ear and Nathan finishes the job by beating Ahab; a shocked X-Men team finishes the cleanup and brings the students back for treatment. Kurt tries to distract Monet. Terry emails Bobby, counting down the days until she is at Cassidy Keep. 2008: Bedlam: Amanda gives away her St. Jude medallion for food and a place to sleep. Cain announces the start of spring and various projects. Remy announces he and Sarah are returning to New York to pursue some of Snow Valley's other matters and asks Bishop to be in the office. 2009: Laurie and Eamon have brunch in Venice. Jan celebrates Limerick Day. Callie asks Fred to Prom. Mark invites everyone to a Eurovision party at his place that night. Shiro and Jean-Paul enjoy the roof couch, and discuss JP's involvement with Jake. After a smoke and a run, Julian and Lil find themselves in Xavier's main kitchen. The inevitable discussions of life, dating and Prom ensue. 2010: Sarah makes a post on the journal, and there is talk of restyling Logan's jeans but all hell breaks loose when Doug and Amanda get into a fight over recent events involving Belladonna, forcing Remy to step in. After emailing Amanda and receiving news that Belladonna's been made Black Queen, Angelo informs Doug that their friendship is over. Farouk meets with David Langstrom in Washington and declines an offer of protection by the Company. He meets with Remy soon after and informs him of his intention to leave the mansion, but not before handing over the Ozymandius File. Doug sends Amanda an email letting her know that he will continue to do his job regardless of how everyone else feels about it. Doug sends Angelo an email to try to set things straight. Nico decides to plan a surprise party for Doreen and contacts the New Mutants about it. While nursing a hangover, Jared meets Kurt in the kitchen and they make small talk. John picks Amara up after work and they head out for a movie. Sofia makes a post in her journal, commenting about the drama in her office. 2011: X-Men Mission: Roller Derby Queen: The X-Men regroup before their second roller derby match and make final preparations for it; the other X-Men head for the meeting before the next derby match begins; the final match begins but it has one last surprise in it for the X-Men taking part. Amara e-mails Angelo, Kevin, and John, asking for help to move to her and Callie's new place, promising beer and food as rewards. Doug and Wade have dinner at Mama Lupe's and have some non-awkward talk for a change. 2012: Laurie posts in her journal saying she got her MCAT score back. Kyle mistakes this for a cat, and Laurie tells Jean she got a 33.8 - enough to get into NYU for medical school, but not what Laurie wanted. Doug and Marie-Ange meet for a monthly reading on the various threats that X-Force faces. It ends... very unexpectedly. Fred and Kyle talk lawnmower engines, X-Men training and girls. 2013: Kyle mentions that one should keep time zones in mind when calling one’s mother for Mother’s Day first thing in the morning. Johnny asks Lorna if he can be her new kitchen minion now Catseye is planning her own restaurant. Matt is jubilant to turn 18. 2014: Cecilia posts about a man whose brain injury made him a math whiz. Sooraya seeks advice about Malala’s Rose from Cecilia and Jean. PHASE 2 2015: Jubilee makes a journal post about wanting to sleep for a week. Garrison gets a visitor in in miserableness who is winged, blond, rich and any number of hittable things; Garrison is visited by North and explores his secondary mutation of rancid cheese powder; Gabriel is bribed into delivering beer to Garrison. 2016: Miles texts Bobby, Rahne, Nica, and Amara looking to celebrate school being almost over this Saturday with a trip into the city. Looking for Bas, Maya comes across Stephen and offers him a unique opportunity. Megan texts Topaz to ask if she ever studied Welsh in England. Quentin is out of his element looking to score at a punk rock concert, but a twist of fate helps him accomplish his goals. Reed delivers flowers to Sue with a cryptic note attached. Doug emails Emma about Hope A.’s interest in the Hellfire Club. 2017: 2018: Clea texts Nica about doing something for her birthday. Angelo posts about Eurovision. Hope A. invites friends to her 21t birthday next weekend. Miles and Bobby talk - and then do more than talk. 2019: Jubilee posts about binging Lucifer, and posts a song. 2020: 2021: Alison posts a question about whether anyone knows the best Japanese food place in New York City, wanting to get some umeboshi onigiri and needs someone to hook her up. 2022: Alani shares her post-graduation expectations. 2023: Sooraya and Nica run a Danger Room exercise together to work on their leadership and hostage negotiation respectively.
