After refusing to aid in the cultivation of drugs for her benefactor, young chlorokinetic Klara Prast hides in a maze of red roses she has constructed with her powers until she can escape to the authorities.

Plot Summary
After approaching Mike Cooper, the greenhouse owner with whom she has been living and for whom she has been working, to let him know that she does not feel comfortable growing hemp and poppies for his customers anymore, Klara Prast finds herself threatened with a knife. After placating Cooper, she flees into a field adjacent to the greenhouse and grows a maze of rose bushes to hide herself, where she pleads for someone to help her.
Hiding in the roses, Klara reflects on her manifestation in a small Amish community and how she came to be ostracized and demonized for being a witch. Though protected from the rest of the community by her parents, Klara decides to leave her home with only a note to her family, and sets off across the state in search of her eldest brother, Joseph, who is living outside the Amish community. She also thinks back onto her inability to find Joseph and her poverty-driven decision to go work for Mike Cooper, trading her powers for room, board, and an allowance.
Hearing Coop and his friends trying to make their way through the maze, Klara goes to the police station where she is reunited with her brother Joseph. At Joseph's, Klara is informed that her brother has been contacted by Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters and after a discussion Klara agrees to attend.
