Details
The Avengers came onto the scene during a prison breakout on Ryker's Island involving super-powers. Officially aligned with SHIELD, they are the group's response to national - or international - threats and mutant-related incidents too large for a regular SHIELD team to deal with. Given the various personalities on the team, their personal views of the 'mutant problem' vary, but for now, they stick to the official line.
The existence of the group is not exactly a secret, however, without a "Battle of New York" in this universe, they have a relative low profile, of interest mainly in a political sense or to those curious about superpowered beings in general. This of course is open to change in the future, depending on the team's activities.
In March 2017, as the result of a mind-altering spell by Loki, the Avengers tried to attack the Triskelion. The X-Men were called in by SHIELD as the only option to stop them, which was managed after pitched battles. As a result of the publicity from the incident, the X-Men were seen as a mutant terrorist group who had attacked SHIELD agents; in reality, the incident at least began some reconciliation between the groups. This was further highlighted in May 2018 when the Avengers requested the assistance of the X-Men to stop a rampaging pyrokinetic android.
In July 2019, an attempt by exiled Asgardians in collaboration with The Dweller in the Dark and its followers to take over the Earth resulted in the Avengers joining forces with the X-Men to protect one of the hammers from being taken. Little did they realised that the Hulk was one of the Worthy, making contact with the hammer and being possessed by the spirit of Nul. Moving into the villains' endgame, the Avengers and the mansion's teams collaborated to form nine teams, seven (Deathlok, Black Widow, War Machine, Hawkeye, Cpationa America, Falcon and Vision) of which were scattered across the world to take down the Worthy, one to take down Skadi, daughter of Cul (Iron Man), and one to confront Cul himself (Thor). Once Cul was killed, the hammers dissolved into dust, releasing their hosts, including the Hulk.
Another collaboration was called for in 2021, firstly when Captain America was taken by A.I.M. and MODOK during a mission, requiring the X-Men to join Phil Coulson and Agents May, Simmons and Fitz to rescue him. Then in October 2021 the two teams worked together again to help protect Baltimore from invasion of giant crustaceans.

Meta
Socked by: Modsocks - no specific sockers, but all logs must be cleared by the mods before posting.
The Avengers were introduced as modsocks to ensure continuity of their characterisation and to prevent them from being applied for, as they would have to be radically changed as characters in order to integrate with the mansion. Clinton Barton was already established as a character, so Kate Bishop was brought in as Hawkeye, and at the time the plot was approved, a Natasha Romanov application had been received, so she was swapped out for fellow Red Room survivor, Yelena Belova.
The Avengers are intended to be antagonists, but not enemies, of the X-teams.
