One team, led by Angelo, went to the location the Dark Riders had previously been spotted – Africa. From the information they were able to gather, they were able to link with Doug’s team of hackers to discover the Dark Riders had been collecting information and artifacts relating to the En-Sabah-Nur mythos. Emma, along with the occult research types as well as her sister, used her influence to gain access to the London Hellfire Club’s archives, where they were able to pull up enough information to explain why Apocalypse might have driven Jean into manifesting the Phoenix – En-Sabah-Nur had written of a powerful firebird who was said to inhabit a host in order to protect humanity from the Celestials, mythical, destructive beings who would one day arrive to judge the Earth and its inhabitants. The group was also able to provide a number of locations where the firebird was said to have manifested and would be drawn to. Meanwhile, Ororo and her team went to Africa and the last-known location of Apocalypse’s base, while Remy and his small team of four went to Cairo to follow up on rumors of Apocalypse having been there.

The first part of the plan went according to plan – the Phoenix appeared, Jean its apparent host although somehow looking younger than the X-Man they knew. But Apocalypse became the victim instead of the master, as the Phoenix tore him to shreds, mentally and physically, and turned her attention to his followers.

Jan 15 - A Touch Of Brimstone: Late at night, Hope asks Topaz if she can join in the TV night; Cecilia sends Wade a YouTube link to distract him; Logan suggests to Wade that they go to Harry’s and attempt to get drunk; in the morning, Jennie texts Wade about how Matt died and what happened to his killers; an extremely high Laurie posts to the journals about her missing arm and Tabitha’s death. Wanda recruits Arthur to help with the investigations. Fires From The Ashes: Angelo leads a team made up of Hope, North, Cecilia and Jessica to Africa to investigate the last previous location of the Dark Riders. Doug, Sarah, Namor, Sue and Gabriel perform information gathering, hacking and calling people from the brownstone to figure out what’s happening. Emma, Wanda, Adrienne, Amanda, Topaz and Billy head to the Hellfire Club’s archives in London to find out about En-Sabah-Nur. Ororo, Marie-Ange, Callisto, Wade, Rachel and Cammie head to Africa to locate Apocalypse’s base. Remy, Artie, Jubilee, Arthur hunt for information about Apocalypse in Cairo. Adrienne texts Tandy and Rogue to tell them that she had been dragged off to London and telling them they could have her stuff if she didn’t make it back. Namor texts Clint to let him know that he skipped out on his plane home and got shanghaied into helping Doug search for information. Clint texts Gabriel teasing him about hacking with Namor.

At the same time the Phoenix appeared, the various research teams were attacked by various dopplegangers, alternate versions of themselves from other dimensions, all apparently under some kind of mental compulsion. Angelo’s team fought against their 1980’s counterparts, with Cecilia injured during the fray. Doug’s team was attacked by Nazi imposters of themselves and barely managed to defeat them. Emma’s team ran into demonic versions of themselves and they made it through though significantly worse for wear. Ororo’s team faced off against cyborg versions of themselves, and had a brush with an illusion of Lady Death.

Jan 16 - Fires From The Ashes: Wade contacts Weasel warning him that if he doesn’t hear from Wade to clean out some accounts and run. Wade emails cecilia warning her that if anything happens he has a safety net in place to let her escape and take people with her while she does. Doug and Wade exchange texts asking for help if the other one were to die. Wade texts Scott asking if there was anything new to hear about Jean. Arthur posts multiple twitter posts to a locked account letting people keep up on his adventures in spying. Jubilee texts Arthur, not pleased with his tweeting at all. Amanda confirms for Remy that Apocalypse is on the move in one of the Pheonix sites in India. Remy and his team track Apocalypse to India and stumble across the Phoenix, barely escaping moments before she destroys the city. Angelo and his team engage in combat with alternate versions of themselves dressed like they came from the 80s, they beat them but cecilia is hurt during the fight. Doug’s team is attacked by Nazi imposters of themselves and barely manage to defeat them. Emma’s team run into demonic versions of themselves, they make it through though significantly worse for wear. Ororo’s team faces off against cyborg versions of themselves, and have a brush with an illusion of Lady Death. Lilandra sends Charles an email demanding that Jean Grey be turned over to the Imperial Guard for trial and severing all ties with the X-men. The Professor asks Paige to build him a suppressor which could be used to contain Jean’s powers. Topaz sends Taboo a message telling him she can’t forget what he did but she forgives him. Longshot posts a picture he took of someone who looks like Jean just before she wiped out Visakhapatnam. Wade sends Marie-Ange a text saying he saw Longshot’s twitter and is willing to take down Jean if they can find her. Rogue texts Logan, Jessica and Adrienne admitting she’s scared and asking them if they’re all ok.

In Visakhapatnam, the Imperial Guard Pulsar’s arrival prompted the Phoenix to destroy him and the entire city, with Remy and his team barely escaping in time by hijacking Apocalypse’s teleporter. Millions were killed in the explosion, and shortly after, the Indian Prime Minster, Lilandra Neramani sent Charles an email demanding that Jean Grey be turned over to the Imperial Guard for trial and severed all ties with the X-Men. The Professor, unable to believe his first student capable of genocide, asked Paige to build him a suppressor which could be used to contain Jean’s powers, fully intending to find her first and determine the truth. Other Xavierites were not so sure of Jean’s innocence, given her actions at Muir Island, and private debates raged.

Jan 17 - Fires From The Ashes: Adrienne sends Garrison an email telling him she loves him; Doug tests Wade asking him what’s up with all the dopplegangers floating around at the moment; Jubilee complains about feeling like she was hit by a truck and asks about what’s to be done about Jean - or maybe her doppleganger; in medlab, this time as a patient, Cecilia reflects on Amelia’s bedside manner.

Plot Summary

Following the Muir Island disaster, the senior members of X-Force and the X-Men gathered with Charles to discuss the fallout from the attack and Jean’s manifestation of the Phoenix, as well as plan their next moves. It was decided that the Dark Riders were the anomaly – it had been clear that destroying Muir had not been part of Magneto’s plan, raising the question of what was Apocalypse planning?

The first part of the plan went according to plan – the Phoenix appeared, Jean its apparent host although somehow looking younger than the X-Man they knew. The concept of the Phoenix is based on the Marvel comics canon.

The dopplegangers from alternate dimensions were homages to classic fiction tropes and/or Marvel comics:

1980s X-Men

Nazi X-Men

Evil Cyborgs

Inferno X-Men
