"Well, I've been here a spell and y'don't look familiar, so I guess so," she reasoned. "But that ain't a bad thing, we get a lotta new folks in fits and starts 'round here, and it keeps things interestin', so glad t'have ya." She nodded to his guitar. "We don't get many who can play like you, though, so that's good... d'you sing too, by any chance?" she asked. "My singin' leaves, uh, a little somethin' t'be desired, not that it stops me, though I usually try an' keep it to t'shower." Jay nodded at her mystification at being called ma'am. He guessed she was in her late twenties, but he'd rather be overly polite to the woman he had just met than not polite enough. She had a look of something like a sheriff about the way she stood. "I don't sing," he told her, not wanting to weigh her down with the whys of it. That he could sing like a bird on a line if he wanted to, but just couldn't bring it out of himself. But he carried a sadness when he said it. "But you ain't as bad as you're makin' yourself out t'be, from the little I heard. Didn't mean to interrupt your walk." "Aw, well, that's a pity," Inez replied, registering his sadness but not sure what to make of it as she doesn't know him, well, at all. "Bu they, with your great playin' y'might just attract someone t'be your songbird," she said, looking for a silver lining. "An' you weren't interruptin' much, I promise. Just lookin' for a little peace of mind, it can get kinda... busy in there, heh," she added with a chuckle. "Where are you from, Jay?" she asked, figuring it was probably closer to her neck of the woods than where they currently were located, but wanting to be polite and not assuming anything. "Maybe so," he said to her with a grimace, feathers ruffling slightly. Jay had spent so long with them bound down against his back that he hadn't yet learned the little body language tics his wings gave him. "An' back home I thought a house o' nine other people was bad enough," he agreed with her as he moved to stand. "I'm from Kentucky, Cumberland County," he told her with a pain through his heart at the thoughts of home. "I'm guessin' you're a country girl too, Miss...?" He asked to prompt her for her name. Singing with someone should at least get some sort of name, he figured. "Uh, Inez," she repeated, though she'd been singing just before that and startled him so she just chalked it up to that. "An' yeah, I'm from Texas originally, though I ain't been back home for a spell," Inez admitted with a frown and a little sigh. "Kentucky's real nice though, I've done some jobs there, been a few years or so but I remember it well enough." She gave him a small smile and was about to ask him what he did when he realized, well, he had wings, so. "A flyer, then, are ya? Don't ask how I guessed that one," she said with a little chuckle and a wink. Jay didn't realize that Inez had already told him her name. It'd been hard to focus lately. He nodded at her compliments to Kentucky and the confirmation she was Texan. He'd guessed as much, sure, but he would have been off. "Not supposed to be doin' much flyin' lately, but that's right," Jay confirmed, flexing a wing so that Inez could see the teal vet wrap on the radiale joints in his wings. "So many mutations I wouldn't know where t'start guessin' with you," he said, inviting her to tell him, as he moved to stand. "Yeah, there's a lotta us here for sure, an' a lotta different ones, so I can't fault y'there," she admitted. "I'm just a plain enhanced human, I reckon you'd say... extra strength, stamina, speed," Inez said, counting off on her fingers. "Nothin' too fancy but I'm a good hand to have in a brawl," she chuckled. "Sorry that you're hurt," she added after seeing the wrap on his wings. "I hope it won't keep you grounded for too long?" "There's something plain about all that?" Jay said with a raised eyebrow and a low, oriole-like whistle. "Coulda fooled me." What was this sort of place where that was run-of-the-mill? Some old part of him he was still learning to silence thought like laughing in God's face. "And I should be set soon. They say they just gotta reteach the healing factor- whatever that is- to heal straight and not sprained." "Well, y'know," she drawled with a smirk. "What can I say, everythin's bigger in Texas, I reckon I might be a little biased," she chuckled. "Ahh, well, I ain't much for that kinda thing, I'll be real honest, but if someone's tellin' y'that then they know what's goin' on and you'll be right as rain in no time flat, I'd wager." Today in XProject: November 1 PHASE 2 2015: Warren texts Felicia telling her that his beard is gone and asking if she wants to go out for brunch. Jean-Paul and Gabriel chat after waking up in an apartment in Brooklyn together, having spent the night with roommates. Stephen and Sharon F.play a game of soccer and discuss magic and the limits to his power. Do I Know You?: Quentin telepathically experiences the pain a young woman being prepped for powers-removing surgery feels from her powers six hundred miles away; Rachel texts Haller asking if he heard a sound like a wild monkey getting decapitated by a rhino. Bobbi meets Clint thanks to a thrown sock and beer and sandwiches ensue. Rahne, scared of Maya and her angry outbursts, tries to get her attention without startling her but sets off Maya’s powers instead; Xavin’s xBox controller is the only casualty, fortunately. 2016: Amanda admits the Romani contingent at the mansion were behind the pumpkins. 2017: 2018: Reed makes a journal entry inquiring about people’s perfect and favourite dates. 2019: House of Horrors: Betsy reflects on her Halloween ninja experience. 2020: 2021: Monster Mash: Darcy vents her feelings about magic books. Felicia thanks Kevin for her birthday gift. 2022: Very early in the morning, Alani asks Felicia for a ride home, or at least come on the bus with her. Forge emails Maya talking about ghosts and demons and the Adversary; Maya texts Amanda, freaked out and asking for help; Amanda checks in on Forge and discovers his trauma is suppressing his natural magical talents. Arthur posts a thank you to those who attended the District X Halloween celebrations, noting there was a lady with a sword there. 2023: A Haven to Call Home: Terry makes a post asking how to prepare for a hurricane; Quentin makes a post explaining that because all flights in and out of New York are canceled, he’s stuck in Oregon; Darcy makes a post saying she, Doug, and Matt will be back once she can rebook flights from Nevada; Warren makes a post asking how he can help “without getting his pants wet”; Amanda makes a post saying she feels sick as a result of the floods in District X; Alani makes a post explaining that NYC and DX are flooding and that she is currently at the community center; Clint texts Sam to ask if he needs anything; Terry texts Arthur to check in on him; Alani texts Quentin to say that they need teleporters organized; Illyana texts Warren to ask if they have corporate housing available; Match and Artie work on sandbagging and find out they have a lot in common; Sam and Nica fly into each other - or rather Sam flies through Nica; Hope A. and Kurt team up to look for people who need evacuation; Alani goes to Namor to request help in the flood; Sam returns to the centre and has a chat with Alani while collecting supplies. Mutants and Molotovs: Terry and Jean have breakfast and discuss Terry becoming a trainee; Wanda gets a bad feeling about Seattle; Nathan and Jean see the riot start to erupt; the X-Men swing into action and the field trip students are restricted to the hotel with Angelo and Manuel in charge as the eldest; Manuel and Terry get drunk and fool around; Nate and Jubilee briefly talk about Amanda leaving. 2006: Pete rounds up the X-Force crew to investigate Magneto's whereabouts given the news of Pietro's appearance at the mansion; Scott informs the team and Forge of Pietro's double agent status. Dogs of War: Doug uncovers news of a 'werewolf' in Tennesee, in conjunction with the disappearance of five teens; the younger members of X-Force (plus Wanda) decide to investigate, under protest from Remy and Pete. Mommy Dearest Redux: Kurt returns from Germany and informs the staff and Amanda the Szardos Clan no longer has any ties to the school. Crystal emails Marie, concerned about the unexplained arrival of a known Brotherhood member, and Marie hands her over to Scott. Marius announces his cure and Kyle announces the return of his pig. The Gates: The Elpis team arrive in Smichov and find it is as bad as they feared. 2007: Kevin runs into Kurt in the kitchen and names the new puppy Triscuit; Yvette posts about being glad to be back. Thirteen Days: Amanda discovers Angelo is back and awake, and comes to see him, having a wiggins about him being sucked into space; Scott regains consciousness briefly; Laurie checks on Scott and finds him too woozy for serious conversation; Nathan and Ororo talk about what was accomplished; Laurie checks on Marie, watching over Garrison. Marius is disgruntled about his lack of drugs in the face of everyone else's stoned posts. Lorna posts pictures of her dog dressed up as a cowgirl for Halloween. Jono's birthday. Kevin decorates Clarice's cast. Terry goes back to Cassidy Keep and Bobby tells her he'll be going back to college there. Shiro visits Clarice and she thanks him for the rescue. 2008: Pride Goeth: Amanda wonders where Farouk is and gets some disturbing clues as to what he's been up to; Amanda emails Forge and Jubilee in the course of her investigation. Bishop meets with Forge to make some security suggestions and they go for a drink. Jay literally falls all over himself upon meeting Bishop in the halls. Clarice comments on Laurie's powers-related purple-ness. Angel and Amanda run into each other in the kitchen and discuss eating habits. 2009: In the very early morning, a drunken Manuel comes home and encounters Cammie and he tells her some truths about their relationship. Kyle is confused about the decorations at the party the night before. Jennie posts about beating her birthday curse. A pain in Fred's arm concerns Callie and she prompts him to get it checked out, and he reveals there is a problem with his powers but flees before he can tell her what it is. 2010: New Orleans: The Pontchartrain Strain: At the morgue, Marie-Ange gets a lesson in New Orleans Guilds|Guild poisons and seeks information into the odd death of a former high school coach at the school the target of her visions attended. 2011: Vanessa - still wearing Laura's form - seeks out Laura and admits she can't change back and needs clothes; Vanessa posts to her journal that she's awake and her thanks for various forms of help and that she's not up for a lot just yet; Jean talks to Haller about Vanessa's state of mind and her own issues with the case. Jean-Phillipe is puzzled by a sudden tennis obsession and the purchase of a tennis racket. Matt posts about his regular meeting with his social worker, which went better than he expected, clothes shopping and the weirdness of the Halloween party. Wade visits a headachey Matt after his shopping trip and they talk about Layla's attitude. 2012: Operation: A Hammer To Fall: X-Force arrives in London and meets with Romany Wisdom; one team looks for information on Taboo and Topaz; the second looks for information on the Destines; in a third attack, one of the Destines is badly hurt by one of Topaz’s spells; in the wake of the last attack, Topaz expresses concern for the man she injured and Taboo turns on her; X-Force gate crashes the final attack. 2013: Fred posts about a Close-Enough-to-Halloween scary movie marathon. 2014: Clint visits Laurie in the medlab and talks about training, the paparazzi, and his attraction to Gabriel. Gabriel texts Angel to thank her for visiting the day before.
