"Oh. You're from . . . somewhere else." Davey scrunched his face with the agony of third-hand memory. It wasn't really like talking to Jack, more remembering something he'd forgotten. "Okay, I think I got it now. We knew each other there, right?"
Kevin nodded. "Ye were the only person who wis ever nice."
"Yeah, that sounds like me," said Davey, brightening. If this man thought he was acting like himself again it meant he knew Davey, not Jim. How often did that happen? He leaned forward, suddenly eager.
"Okay! So what happens is, sometimes I don't remember stuff I should?" Davey folded down the excess paper, creasing it away from the triangle. He tried not to sound too excited. "It's annoying, but I do okay if people help me. Like now, I basically remember you, but not your name. Remind me?"
"Kevin." He said with some finality. "Apparently everythin has a name? But a didny until ye told me."
Davey nodded. "Yeah, that sounds like me. David's a know-it-all." He paused to tear the rest of the paper from the triangle, then jerked his head up, suddenly inspired. "Hey, what about Kev?"
Kevin made a soft noise that might have been a question as he leaned back over the paper to carefully add more color to his drawing. "Whit's that?"
The alter opened the paper and pressed it against the floor, making a series of quick creases and folds. "It's a nickname. Like, there's names your family gives you, and then there's names your friends give you. Or names you give yourself because you like them better, I guess. Davey's a nickname for David, technically. Anyway, I don't have to if you don't like it," he added hastily, "I just thought maybe it could be a thing for us, because we're friends?"
Kevin’s chest felt warm and a real genuine smile free from any sort of predatory grimace spread across his face. “Yeah. I like that.”
"Yeah?" Despite his determination to be the Cool One Davey's face split in a grin. Practically all his life people had been judging him by how different he was from Jim and the others before they even really got to know him, but Kevin didn't seem to care. In fact he seemed to like Davey better. It was a thrill.
The weird, dull ache in his chest told him getting a smile out of Kevin was, too.
"Okay, then I'm calling you Kev. And I got our first project, too." Davey made a few final folds to the printer paper and held it up to Kevin. It was a simple paper frog.
Kevin's eyes lit up. "Whit...whit color are they outside?"
"Oh, they can be lots. I can find some on my phone so you can see, but really they can be any color you want, actually. Because what I'm going to do is I'm going to make a lot and we're gonna make all of them jump--" Davey pressed down on the frog's hindquarters with an index finger; it did more of a back-flip than a leap, but his point was proven "--and we turn it into a contest to see which one does it the best. Like a bracket? We test two frogs at a time and the winner goes up against the next winner. But I need you to color them so we can tell them apart. Wanna try?" He picked up the frog and held it out to Kevin, an offering.
If anything Kevin's smile grew, splitting his face almost uncomfortably wide. "Yeah...is this....is this play? A never got tae dae that before."
"Well, you're gonna be doing it a lot now," Davey declared matter-of-factly. He handed the frog to Kevin and grabbed another sheet of paper, beaming.
2015: Amanda e-mails Angelo and John to invite them for Thanksgiving dinner. Amanda also e-mails Jean-Phillipe asking him to help convince Angelo to come to Thanksgiving. Alison texts Xavin to see if they’re ok. Jean-Paul makes a journal entry asking where he can find new sheets. The Hedgehog and The Fox: A moment from Jennie’s past; Jennie and Clint meet with the Danish police, and are put on the path of Copenhagen's newest serial killer.
2018:Matt posts a new photo of himself with beard. Morningstar: Warren manages to insult Lorna and she suspends him; there's also an article on the society pages about him insulting a journalist; Felicia contacts Kevin for help with Warren.
2019: Sharon emails the rest of the medical staff about the issues with deliveries. Matt reflects on the difficulties in not being able to talk freely about his life at social events. Topaz takes Ty out to a Brazilian steakhouse and he asks about London.
2020: Clarice asks a hopefully rhetorical question about stabbing people over coffee. Fourteen reveals her true nature to Doug when he checks on her at Marie-Ange's behest.
2021: Maya asks who Nora is. Terry meets Nora while delivering food and have a little power talk. Nora publicly posts about her situation and opens up the gates for questions.
2022: Clint posts in the eXcalibur team journal to ask Forge about the new vending machine and its contents.
2023: Rictor and Alani make fried rice and talk. Liam texts Darcy and Terry to ask what pies his mom should send to the mansion. Sam meets Quentin, and they have an impromptu job interview. Sam excitedly lets Clint know he got the job. Sam meets Sharon and the teenage boy squad. Clarice tends to the comatose Haller and "talks" with April, who is standing watch. Arthur visits Jessica with Bea tagging along and Jessica gets a new camera... and a new roommate.
2005:Lost Generations: Angelo and Nathan discuss the South East Asia problem. Fear Itself: Dani and Marius get stuck in a powers feedback loop; Rahne tracks Marius down afterwards and helps him get through the panic.
2006: News of Bobby and Terry's marriage leaks out. Lorna announces she is spending Thanksgiving with her parents; Forge announces he is not. Amanda returns from Berlin and announces she has legally changed her name from Gemile Szardos. She also emails Sofia, asking for a counselling appointment for the first time. Domino takes Nathan out drinking and he gets morose. Angelo talks to Marius about his comments about Smichov on the journals.
2007:Karma Police: Wanda and Jennie come to, finding they aren't alone - Domino and several other probability manipulators have been captured by a group calling themselves the Exemplars, who plan to eradicate their powers as an affront to order; their interference causes a massive lucksnap, and in the confusion the captives free themselves and fight back; the Exemplars escape; Jennie and Wanda make their reports; Wanda asks some of the Snow Valley staff to check into the Exemplars and make sure Agatha Harkness is all right. Jan posts her own hat thread. Kyle emails Yvette about Ororo, and Yvette and Angel about an idea for their cooking final. Yvette finally talks to Tommy about last month's encounter with Jay.
2008: Meggan rescues Catseye from a box. Nori is unhappy to discover her parents are visiting after Thanksgiving. Marie-Ange comments on the world's ten ugliest buildings. Kyle recruits Yvette to help him with the groundskeeper's job; Yvette posts about her new employment; Kyle announces his new status to the school at large.
2009:X-Men Mission: Jailbreak: Overnight, Search Party Three - Nightcrawler, Beast, Wasp and Magma (Caldera) - catch up with Magnetic North and Mad Dog and a pitched battle ensues, with Arlee Hicks, Refrax, Gregor, Lexa Pierce and Mad Dog recaptured, but Wasp being injured after being thrown from a plane; the final search party - Sway, Meltdown, Hamster and Emo Blue - are directed to a train yard, where Toad, Wildside, Dragoness and Ricochet are trying to hitch a ride; another fierce battle occurs, with Wildside being killed after poisoning Hamster, Emo Blue going after Toad regardless of orders and winding up nearly suffocating from Toad's adhesive resin and Sway almost crushed by a building when her and Ricochet's powers clash. Laurie and Kyle talk after the mission, but some things just aren't easily talked about.
2010: Warren is cranky about Piotr's presence so Amanda inflicts a punk club on him as a distraction.
2011: Laurie posts about signing up for flying lessons, having had the urge since the Halloween party. Amanda meets Korvus in the gym and does not have "The Talk" with him about Meggan. Jean-Paul surprises Catseye by picking her up from the airport upon her return from Tel Aviv. Sam runs into Layla with an apple-pumpkin strudel and claims her as his new favourite. Catseye announces her return on the journals. Warren and Bishop discuss the possibility of Warren's firm working with X-Factor Investigations. Garrison brings Vanessa Chinese food and Kung Fu and during the evening she reverts back to her own form. Having missed Catseye's announcement, Yvette is surprised by Catseye showing up. Korvus and Sam talk after class about Korvus' issues with casual English.
2012: Sharon and Callie encounter each other in the woods. Charles interviews Jennifer Walters about becoming the Institute's new lawyer and invites her to join the team; Jennifer meets Angel and gets the tour.
