She couldn't think of any anniversaries or special occasions that would call for this sort of evening, but Terry also hadn't really thought about them much after they started the drive. "Are y'goin' t'give me a hint about what's brought us out tonight? No' that we need a reason, o'course." Instead, first, Kyle drank his water. "No reason for tonight, I guess, but not no reason?" Water was great, he took another drink. "I've planned this a lot. So much. Ter, you have no idea how many times. I am so glad you don't see how many times Marius has made fun of me. Including this weekend." He paused. "I was gonna do it this weekend, and then I couldn't be that much of a cliche. I couldn't. Valentine's Day is a ..." He fumbled a little, and went into his suit pocket and brought out the little pinecone, wrapped so carefully in white tissue paper shot through with gold. "You see me. I mean. You know me, and you've seen me at my worst, and you know me at my best, or the best I am right now, and you make sure I'm not running myself into the cracks, and you never hesitate to tell me I'm neglecting myself, but you also - you get why I do what I do, teaching and the institute work and the team." He nudged the little pinecone, fingers stiff with sheathed claw. "You tell me when I'm doing good work and you believe in what I'm doing and you give like, so much of your time to people, and you jump both feet right into caring for people and you make me a better person. That's really what it is, we make each other better people. We're a team. I mean, we're on the team but we're a team." "So. I wanted to make this us, and not because of the date, or a holiday and don't ask me how many times I had this pinecone in my pocket and ready to just ask, and couldn't make the words come out, and today felt right. So." He pulled on one delicate edge of the tissue paper, to show a glint of metal. "The first time we met, this pinecone was in my pocket and I couldn't tell you why I saved it then, but I've been saving it for years now, so that I could have it when I asked you to marry me." Getting down on one knee was not something a person rehearsed, except one billion times in their head. "Will you marry me?" Terry had been teasing, sort of, about why they'd gone out to such a posh restaurant, but then Kyle had started talking and her eyes had widened. They'd continued widening until she'd needed to blink and when he said he'd kept the pinecone for years so he could have it when he proposed -- tears welled up in her eyes as her hands covered her mouth. Then he'd asked and he was on one knee and he'd -- his claws were retracted and the way she loved him was just the same as breathing, natural and easy and so, so necessary. "Yes," she said, standing up from the chair she'd so recently sat down in. Reaching for his hand, Terry cupped his in her palms and stared at Kyle with bright, happy, teary eyes. "Yes, yes -- I'll marry you, y'wonderful tree of a man." Then she tugged on his hand until he stood. "I love y'so much." "Okay, but there's a ring on the pinecone." Kyle's voice came out quiet and a little rough, deep baritone with nervousness and emotion. "A really good one. I had help. I don't want to rip the paper though." He wiggled his fingers against Terry's hands. "I love you so much." Today in XProject: September 3 PHASE 2 2015: Laurie posts this article. Cecilia and Bobbi talk about books and biology. 2017: Lorna and Warren share chat and a casual flight. 2018: Tandy offers tickets to Fashion Week to whoever wants them. 2019: Marie-Ange shares the drama of the Stuart Semple v. Anish Kapoor art world pigment battle with the mansion. Topaz texts Marie-Ange to update her on her new bird following. 2020: Marie-Ange asks Doug to make a sacrifice to ensure Jubilee isn't paralysed; later Doug brings Marie-Ange some art and gets a sword out of it. 2021: 2022: 2023: Clint texts Sam to ask him to come to the Labor Day celebrations at the mansion. Matt makes a journal entry about his new braille Lego set from Darcy. Jessica finds her old journal entries and is appalled. 2024: Dixie Dead Shake: The road trippers stop for lunch; Despite their best efforts, they all arrive safe and sound in New Orleans; Amanda makes a journal entry announcing their safe arrival in New Orleans, albeit wishing she’d flown instead of driving there. PHASE 1 2003: Emma emails Scott with concerns about Betsy's emotional state. 2004: Nathan cordially ends his lessons with Manuel, which Moira approves of. He then goes out to play pool with Shinobi, and proves an amusing sight to Angelo. Manuel helps Amanda with her withdrawal, and she and Angelo start to patch things up. Angelo and Shinobi also talk about everything that’s going on, while Madelyn informs Moira that her ulcer is almost gone. 2005: Just One Drug: Doug and Marie-Ange talk to Tante Mattie; Jubilee and Amanda make breakfast for the medlab and discuss addiction. With Malice Aforethought: Kitty runs into Lorna whilst in Florida on vacation with Jamie. 2006: Sooraya starts to move from the boat house to the mansion. Nate seeks out Haller to talk about San Francisco but gets Cyndi instead but finally finds out what happened from both of them. Remy comes by with an official job offer for Mark. Amanda asks Angelo to tutor her in Russian. 2007: Family Portrait: Laurie's mother collapses during her morning show; Haller raises concerns about her health and Laurie's well-being to the rest of the staff; Laurie's mother tells her she has ovarian cancer; Crystal goes to pick Laurie up from the hospital; Laurie goes online to research her mother's cancer and discovers it can be hormonally-caused and blames herself, but Yvette talks some sense into her and persuades her to go talk to Jean. The Winding Way: Kurt and Doug discuss what happened with Jimaine; Wanda notifies Scott and Ororo that Kurt will be out of touch for a little while. Doug tells the Snow Valley staff he's going to Mongolia with Nathan. 2008: Yvette asks on x_kids about what being grounded entails and later goes to ask Dani and gets some reassurance. Forge helps Kyle buy his textbooks and they talk about Laurie. Inez asks Forge about Marius and his dating habits. 2009: Jean and Jean-Paul meet in Jean's office in the infirmary so Jean-Paul can apologize and thank Jean for saving his life. Dori sends a text message to Victor asking him to come over and watch movies. When they get together to watch movies, Doreen tries to put the moves on him but Vic is oblivious. Doreen emails Jean-Paul to ask him (using the time-honoured sneaky alias of 'my friend') how to get the boy she likes to notice her. Jean-Paul texts Scott to ask him out for drinks. Jennie bribes Jake into helping her bring some heavy packages to Wanda with cake they cajole Wanda into joining them and discuss Wanda's working with Dr. Stephen Strange, as well as Cammie. Scott and Jean-Paul go out for drinks and discuss Johnny and parents. 2010: Operation: Lie Back and Think of England: Wanda, Emma and Sarah infiltrate a medical research building and steal some files. Yvette tries to talk to Julian about graduation. 2011: Wade posts about bison. Amanda and Matt meet at the mansion BBQ and talk addiction. Matt posts about his summer school grades and new timetable. Amanda and Nico talk about what Amanda really does for a job. Callie and Sarah makes plans to hang out, with Callie oblivious to Sarah's awkwardness. Sarah and Yvette later have a heart-to-heart about... well. Matters of the heart. Sam bumps into Amara and they catch up a little. 2012: Sonatorrek: While Brand goes to the hospital to get a sample of Don Blakes’ blood, Arnie takes Garrison to the scene of an animal mutilation and explains that violence is increasing in Aitkins; returning to the motel, Garrison finds Nordic runes scrawled on his door in raven’s blood and after a discussion with Brand about the case, finally gives in to her advances; Garrison emails Fred Duncan expressing his concerns there might be a serial killer at work in Aitkins and requesting a full team. Catseye emails Korvus with a plan for a regular dinner with the students. Angel encounters Callie on the back porch and things are awkward until food comes into the equation. 2013: Topaz texts Amanda to ask if they can talk. Amanda texts roommate Marie-Ange, warning her they are about to have an overnight guest. Sooraya texts Yvette and Angel to let them know that she passed her driving exam. Catseye posts about Renee having gone to the West Coast Annex. 2014: Marius and Cecilia literally run into each other in the halls, but instead of adorable, it's awkward and terrible. Lorna posts about heading home. Adrienne posts about not having as many tickets for fashion shows.
