Biography

Childhood

Lorna's childhood history remains incompletely disclosed, including her place of birth and the names of her parents. She was adopted at an early age and took her adopted parents last name 'Dane'. The Danes never told Lorna that they were not her true parents for fear that the truth might have a traumatic effect on her. Lorna grew up unaware of her parentage and led a relatively normal life, except for the naturally green hair she was born with. To avoid unwanted attention, her parents, though later by her own choice, kept it dyed brown at all times. Since coming to the school, she has let it return to her normal green.

Her family is small and close-knit and she has focused a great deal of her life on making her parents proud and living up to their expectations. The Danes are well-off, but by no means wealthy. Lorna grew up in southern California in a fairly exclusive gated community and attended a succession of small, private Catholic schools. She graduated from an all girls Catholic high school and is a national merit scholar. As of her graduation senior year, she had enough AP credits to apply for sophomore standing; this is unremarkable to her as many of her classmates could claim the same. She took four years of Spanish and some of it she even remembers. As well, Lorna took cooking lessons for 7 years, becoming a gifted chef and gaining a passable mastery of French (mostly the swear words).

Post High School/Xavier's

After high school, Lorna took a semester of college in California before deciding that she wanted to learn more about her powers. Though she chose to go to Xavier's, Lorna never believed that she would ever have anything other than a perfectly normal life. When the school was attacked, Lorna had only been in attendance for about three months. She was not present for the events of X2 as she was home for her cousin's wedding.

In the fall of 2005, Lorna was kidnapped by Magneto and forced to wear a collar containing the essence of a dead telepath called Malice. While controlled, she murdered at least Alison Blaire's father, lobotomized two FoH youths named Josh and Karen, kidnapped Forge and nearly killed Remy.

College

Lorna has something of a sporadic relationship with higher education. Lorna previously added UCLA (1 semester), then took some courses through Westchester. She was accepted to the University of Hawaii at Hilo but attended only about 6 weeks of classes there and applied but was not accepted to an internship program at UC Berkeley before settling at Westchester College to finish her degree. Her major is geophysics with an emphasis in terrestrial magnetism and seismology.

2006 was a bad year for Lorna. Beginning in January when she broke off her engagement to Alex in favor of Remy and moving back to the mansion instead of actually continuing the "normal" life that she claimed to want, Lorna's decisions were often erratic and overly emotional. She rejoined the X-Men but found herself confronted with situations that often overwhelmed her including causing the death of a mutant that had taken over F.O.H. offices. Her relationships were equally turbulent whether it be with Remy or with her friends (Alison and Jamie moved to California and Lorna replaced these two best friends with two to five new ones in the person of David Haller). Perhaps most devastating of all was the death of her beloved mentor, Chef Marcel, who succumbed to a heart attack in June.

But it was the discovery that her adoptive parents had a biological daughter that consumed Lorna. For the next several months, Lorna would search for Zala without pause. She broke up with Remy, relapsed into anorexia, had an ill-advised fling in Cabo San Lucas and found herself benched from the X-Men.

2007 wasn't much kinder. Though officially returned to active status and apparently doing better, Lorna's search for Zala only became more intense. When the agency Lorna hired to find her adopted sister refused to continue, Haller connected Lorna with Sofia who used her skills to connect the last few dots. Her discovery of who Zala had become didn't shake Lorna's desire to meet the older woman and she flew out before Easter to do so. The meeting was strange and oddly unproductive but Lorna seems to be at peace with that, at least so far.

Departure

In May 2008 Lorna left to pursue further studies at Berkeley, following a period of time spent living out of the mansion. She returned to the school in March 2010.

Physical Characteristics

Height: 5'7"

Weight: 115 lbs*

Eyes: Green.

Hair: Green.

Other Features: *Lorna suffers from anorexia nervosa and her weight can fluctuate wildly depending on how well her recovery is going. An accident in December 2003 left Lorna with severe burn scars over her right shoulder, most of her back and right thigh. Her right hand has scarring on the palm (a burn mostly healed by Amanda). She also has a massive claw scar on her chest (courtesy of Sabertooth during Malice. She tends to shrug just one shoulder at a time first because of the burns then because her left shoulder has been dislocated twice (once during Thermopylae and once during The Rictor Effect).

Powers

Lorna's mutation is the ability to conduct magnetic pulses as pulse bolts, force fields, flight and the manipulation of ferrous materials, absorb electricity to supercharge her own electromagnetic fields. By concentrating, Lorna can perceive the world around herself solely as patterns of magnetic and electrical energy. She can perceive the natural magnetic auras surrounding living beings, as well.

Her sensitivity to magnetic fields has increased since joining the team, particularly following Thermopylae when she pushed herself passed her usual limits and then later after training by Magneto. At this time, Lorna can tell EM fields well enough to recognize different metals (provided the signature is different enough) but unless a person has an unusually strong EM field (Alison resulting from her power causing EM fluxes, Forge having artificial limbs) or is very familiar to her (Alex, see: calibrating his suit) she can't identify a person by his field.

She can lift herself, as per normal canon and with more difficulty, throw others around. In most cases, she'll use any metal that's handy instead. It's easier to lift someone by his watch than to attempt to move a very weak magnetic field.

Strength-wise, Lorna is a lot less powerful than Magneto. Magneto taught her to shield herself from solar magnetic storms and to use her powers to destroy electrical pathways in a victim's brain, causing brain damage or even death. (Though Malice preferred to touch her victims to do this, physical contact was not necessary and was mostly done to satisfy Malice's and Lorna's mutual dramatic tendencies.)

Shielding-wise, Lorna can block anything metal thrown at her provided she is paying attention. Setting up a shield and doing something else will block some but not all and is liable to get people killed. Ramping up to blocking things like sound (v. v. hard) and light (nigh impossible though Magneto could possibly accomplish it) are short term, full concentration, life or death situations only. Somewhere in between is shielding for non-metal but still material objects. Again, if her attention is off it, stuff will get through.

At the moment, Lorna's powers are unstable. She can no longer lift heavy objects (re: an aircraft carrier) and she has problems multitasking - ex: shielding plus attacking. It simply takes too much out of her. The reason her powers are unstable at the moment is most likely to do with her increased inability to concentrate and her health problems (re: anorexia).

Her body is also acting on its own to protect her from over exerting herself. Further medical tests have revealed that cell regeneration decreases with the use of her powers. If she overexerts herself during missions (ex: absorbing a huge amount of electricity to supercharge her electromagnetic fields) or suffers an injury post using her powers, she takes more days to recover compared to anyone else. That is to say, she'll feel weak and lethargic.

Lorna, like many of the X-team, has modified her uniform. While it weighs about 40-60 lbs (about as much as a suit of armor), owing to having been worked through with dense metal plates, she uses her power to keep them close to her and supple. In a fight, she'll fling the metal at an enemy or use it to pull a Paige and Piotr and sheath her fists in it for hand to hand work (which she tries to avoid).

Equipment

Lorna has no permanent equipment as such. However she does tend to carry at least an pound of metal on her for use in just about any situation. Her X-Men uniform is layered with 40 lbs of metal for use in the field. She uses her powers to keep it flexible while worn.

Trivia

  • Though you couldn't get her to admit in under pain of torture or death, Lorna was once active in a Vampire: the Masquerade LARP.
  • Like Forge, Lorna doesn't like cilantro.
  • Lorna continues to plot ways to get the men of the school into compromising positions, whether it be through a cross-dressing fashion show or a swimsuit calendar. She's been unsuccessful so far at getting any of the males to cooperate and appears to have dropped it.
  • Lorna is also infamous for welcoming newcomers with "Welcome to the Madhouse", to the point if someone else uses it, people will point out that was Lorna's phrase.
