The other man's head cocked to the side only by a few degrees. "Now that we're finished, Clea the Faltine, I have spent the whole of this conversation with a question of my own." He gestured vaguely as to encompass the whole of her. "Why? Why do you work so hard to blend into a people not your own." Clea looked at him for a moment, "Because I don't know my own." She said simply and sighed, "I was a baby when I was brought to this dimension and adopted by my parents. I must have been barely a year old or so. From the records I can find, the Faltines are from a Hell Plane and are very secretive and rarely venture out of their own dimension. As for the Dark Dimension, I know that Dormammu came and took over, which led to a rebellion and the fall of those people. Even then the books I did find don't offer much. From what I saw, it was mostly in ruins. I don't even know if there are survivors that managed to make it this far." She paused again before saying, "I guess we are kindred spirits in a way. We both lost our homes." Tapping her notebook, "Maybe in my search for answers, I will find what I've been looking for." "Yet, you could know them." It was a blunt statement. "I would violate everything sacred under the sun to bring my people back. You hold the power to tear open the way to other dimensions – I have seen what human mages can do. Surely you are more. Even then, We have our own portal. There are ways." Clea looked at him in silence. No one ever mentioned that she could go to them for answers. She knew it would be dangerous to open a portal to the Dark Dimension, not without the risk of Dormammu finding out. Were those people, her people, alive? There was a possibility. All she did see were parts of the capital city and the castle, not the rest. "Isn't the portal unstable at the moment?" She came back to her senses. "Nothing great is guaranteed," Namor said. "You have been too molded by human masters. 'Unstable,'" and his voice pitched higher in mockery, "'Risky.' Those are words used to keep pawns in their place. If that is what you wish to be, so be it." Clea looked down at her notebook, her grimoire in the making, "They have been trying to mold many to be like them. It is why I haven't chosen that path. Despite the rocks, they keep sending." She sighed heavily, "Growing up in a world you thought you belonged in, only to have that reality ripped from underneath you. It makes you feel alone and naked. So, I have been grabbing at anything that will help that feeling lessen and hiding behind the bubble persona." Clea looked at Namor, "I don't know why I am telling you this. I don't want to be a pawn. Ever." Namor didn't even blink. "So you play spy. Do those masters have you stealing from the mountain for their own gains? It is not ignoble to be a pawn. There is a cost to making difficult choices, and those who are content to serve simply refuse to pay." "I play spy because I want to. And XF aren't masters, they pay my bills, so they are my bosses. That isn't a pawn, that is called being an employee. I am allowing my skills to be used and I can quit any time. As for stealing from the mountain, that was my idea." She looked at him for a moment. "Pawns don't get a choice in the matter. I am searching for who I am, and yes, there may be people out there that wish to put me under their thumb. But I can assure you I am too stubborn for that." She reached into her bag and pulled out a hundred dollar bill and placed it on the table. "If I wasn't, I would have joined the Winding Way the moment I received the first rock invitation. Maybe I am using them to fill up the void I feel, to satisfy my hunger for knowledge." Grabbing her grimoire off the table and placing it safely in her back. "Like I said, I don't ever want to be a pawn. Making them think I am - that is a different story." Today in XProject: January 8 PHASE 2 2016: Amadeus displays his latest experiment - flash-fried ballistic shrimp. 2017: Lorna texts Sue, Bobbi and Hope A about her wedding, and asks Wanda to talk in person. With Extreme Prejudice: Quentin and Cecilia have a contentious encounter after the death of the wife of the acquitted police officer; the NYPD announces links between five recent deaths and says police are looking for a serial killer. 2018: Quentin is grouchy about not being able to drink while on antibiotics. Darcy reflects that if she ever gets her PhD, she’ll co-credit her cat as per an internet story. 2019: Kevin S. gives Lorna some insight into why Warren acted terribly. 2020: 2021: 2022: 2023: Having pampered himself following his freedom, Matt shares that he is now prepared in case anything similar happens again. Kyle pulls "Welcome to the team" duty for April's joining the X-Men. 2024: Sam makes a journal post about him and Jay making food for people post-disaster. Sooraya texts Alani to check in on her. Liam texts Ashley asking about sushi. Shatterstar makes a journal entry about being banned from the medlab. Hope A. texts Shatterstar to follow up on him as requested by Haller. Hope S. texts Kyle asking to copy his powers. Haller relaxes in the Box, Topaz crashes in for a Long Sleep. Behold A Pale Horse: Eighteen hours after his encounter with Death, Arthur awakes in observation under the watchful eye of Haller; Jay texts Sam to see if he’s alright and needs him to come get him; Sooraya texts Marie to ask for help and tells her Alani is in Hawai’i; The morning after the attack on District X, Shatterstar and Liam check in on each other; After Kyle leaves the medlab, Terry takes care of a few things, then goes to join him in his suite, where she's met by what she should've expected, not what she hoped for; In the aftermath Liam goes to think and work on a project in the woodshop, where Sharon S. seeks him out; Haller e-mails Hope A. to ask for a favour to check in on Shatterstar. PHASE 1 2004: Shinobi confesses to Alison that he thought of using Miles for his power but assures her he wouldn't. Betsy announces her return to full health and faculties. 2005: Scott gets a pet turtle. Dani and Forge drive to Oklahoma to talk to her soon-to-be-ex-husband. Amanda and Manuel meet with the Pack in Berlin. 2006: Wanda manages a brief meeting with her brother, with snarkiness but also mutual filling-in on their years apart. Moira invites Doug, Forge and Kitty (plus significant others) to Muir to check over her computer systems in the wake of the hacking. 2007: X-Men Mission: Leverage: Forge posts about an upcoming resolution before the government banning insurance companies from asking for genetic status. Terry and Bobby return from Cassidy Keep. Domino helps Angelo get climbing gear, and later he and Nathan talk briefly about why they're there. Pietro sees Scott's scars and they talk about strength and recovery. Garrison and Marie talk about his reaction to X-Men Mission: Phalanx. 2008: Operation: Shaboom: Remy, now an insurance salesman, meets Wanda, a housewife, and discuss angles of investigation; Wanda meets Amanda at the library where she works, and witnesses a disturbing slip into the 1959 persona; under the guise of a pot luck lunch, X-Force meets to compare notes; Wanda and Doug go outside the range of the effect to do some checking on things; Mark, local dance compere, finds Amanda has completely slipped into 'Mandy' and has no memory of the outside world. Marius and Jennie exchange gossip in the kitchen, and Marius is uncomfortable with Jennie's hardline view; later, Marius talks with Monet about the elder Marius, and is again disturbed by a lack of insight. Forge and Crystal meet to debrief about her experience of Cortez, and awkwardly talk about the New Year's kiss. 2009: After meeting about the Hellfire Club the night before, Adrienne and Manuel wake up in bed together. Mechanisms of Revenge: Remy calls Morgan in to help with the Blue Area situation; Morgan and Amanda discuss the past few months; Morgan texts Adrienne offering her a bad guy souvenir; in Blue Mesa, the teams find themselves facing not only the Dark Riders, Sabretooth and Apocalypse, but also the transformed mutants of the commune; the fight goes to a standstill and three mysterious mutants appear on the scene, targeting Apocalypse; Apocalypse is beheaded and the mutants are revealed to be Garrison, Jay and Dani; Morgan calls Adrienne to tell her about Garrison being alive and apparently fine; Amanda posts to x_snowvalley via her PDA with the news all four of the missing are alive; in a secret location, Apocalypse thanks Nathaniel Essex for the clone that was sacrificed at Blue Mesa to allow him to rebuild his army in secret. 2010: Callie gets a pleasant surprise when it's Fred picking her up at the airport and not Julian like she expected; Callie emails Julian telling him he's a jerk for not telling her about Fred, but Julian is unapologetic. Yvette sends Fred an email, apologising for her behaviour several days before. Vanessa gets a letter from her mother, the police having tracked her down through the Snow Valley website, but nothing really changes. Song of Isaac, Key of Solomon: At a meeting of the Alamut, Farouk reveals that Calysee Neramani has been abducted from her house arrest and that her brother D. Ken might be planning a move on Pakistan using her abduction as an excuse; a heated discussion ensues over whether the Alamut should get involved or not. Nico walks in on Julian reading through the old X-Men mission reports and an awkward conversation ensues. 2011: Jean-Paul feeds Laurie waffles and they talk about her unfortunate nagging tendencies. 2012: Sarah V. is unimpressed with how 2012 has gone so far. 2013: Hope posts letting everyone know she has just received a new book, and will be busy reading for a while. Maddie and Tandy "discuss" Tandy's relationship with Clint, and the consequences of Tandy hurting him. Tandy texts Clint asking if he's talked to Maddie recently. 2014: Yvette and Sooraya decide to help a friend who is bedridden from a battle in demonic realms. Scott picks Namor up from his dorms after an incident. 2015: Clarice makes a journal entry about it being David Bowie’s birthday. Rogue shares a list of resolutions for slobs.
