Shapeshifting without the ability to jump onto a different branch of the evolutionary tree seemed rather limited. She straightened and studied Jessie curiously. "I could maybe do something like that?" Jessie tilted her head, thinking. "So like - it's not for protection or anything, but the face you see right now is all kind of subtly changed. When I first manifested, my face liked to change to match my mother's features more than my father's, probably because of gender preferences, so if I preferred blending in... I've never changed my skin color, though." "It would be the most useful. Adaptive camouflage. But unsure of your level of intentionality?" Carelessly, Sharon dropped to the floor and wrapped her arms around her knees so she could gaze up at the shorter girl like a kindergartener at story time. "Instinctive reorientation towards gender preferences, this is interesting to me. Assumption is always that shapeshifting conceals, but this is lies. For us it reveals." Jessie marked her place in the book and rolled so she was on her stomach, looking down at Sharon. "I never really thought about it like that. I've always felt like I'm kind of cheating, especially as a trans person, because most people can't just think and make their face look the way they want it to look - and believe me, trans people would kill for an ability like that. But I can hide the parts of myself that I don't like. But who I am underneath the changes isn't really me either. It's my 'default' form I guess, but it's not who I am." Sharon moved her head in a short, dismissive jerk. "Is not hiding if it is our nature. Our flesh is not fixed. Therefore, all forms are equally ours. Why should we not choose the expression that best suits us? Is this not 'mutant pride'?" Jessie perked up a little. When Sharon put it that way... "Yeah, I suppose it is. Using our powers to choose the face we show the world, right?" "Felicia says that a different face is different armor," said Sharon matter-of-factly. "A projection of who you are that day. This is truth. Felicia is the most wise." "Is Felicia also a cat person?" Jessie asked, tilting her head. "That sounds like a cat name." Sharon's nod was solemn, but her eyes shone. "Felicia is the most Cat of humans. She has taught me much of shapeshifting without shapeshifting using clothing and makeup only. She has claws also, though they are made of metal. Even her disadvantages become strength." The girl hugged her tail to her chest with remembered excitement. "I fought at her side. She took the lives of two men with a dumpster." "She..." Jessie blinked a few times, trying to parse all of that. She thought she had been following pretty well until they got to the part about the dumpster. "Is that a metaphor or did she really kill people with a dumpster? No judgment, I'm sure they deserved it. Just curious." The ailuromorph considered this. "Yes," she said at last. "You have shared with me your knowledge of Nimona. This debt shall be repaid." Sharon dropped her tail, straightened her spine, and nodded to herself. "I shall tell you of Felicia Hardy." Today in XProject: May 11 PHASE 2 2015: Amanda and Bobbi meet in District X while conducting their own separate rounds. 2016: Reed and Hank have a manly chat about their relationships and sex lives... or lack thereof. Jessica makes an FML post, as the kids say. 2017: Warren calls Hope A. to tell her about how the deal between Worthington Industries and Regal Crest Trading went down. 2018: Maya is annoyed Brooklyn Nine-Nine was (briefly) canceled. Angel posts about Amadeus leaving for Muir Island. Generation X: Demon Bear: The kids get to school, and find out there was some vandalizing; through the day, they have weird and terrifying encounters; while talking, Maya sees a girl who disappeared earlier in the day, only for her to disappear again; Nica, Miles, and Xavin arrive at school to meet the kids for a movie, and the world turns upside down; Miles, Nica, and Clea are separated from everyone else; the rest realize something weird is going on; Angel posts about the GPS on the kids’ phones going crazy; Alex, Darcy, Megan, and Julian go to the school to find out what’s going on, and get caught up in the weirdness; more missing, more finding; Nica and Clea find the adults who came to look for them, as well as Rahne; Jean-Phillipe posts about the group that went to the school also falling out of touch; Molly, Meggan, Jean-Phillipe, and Sharon F.arrive at the school and begin investigating; Darcy, Megan, Nica, and Clea find Sharon F., Molly and Megan; all the groups finally reunite, and a plan is set to go at the bear; they have their final encounter with the bear, finally taking it down; Alex, Julian, and Jean-Phillipe find the missing girl, who has no memory of what happened, and bring her to the hospital. Clint posts an update to eXcalibur about tech and wormhole duties. Felicia shares an Instagram story noting that people can buy their own damn flowers. Matt shares an image reminding people to mind their written communication, for legal reasons. Clarice posts an embroidery that she’ll be hanging on her door. Following meeting Maya, Pyotr texts April to ask what “Starfleet” is. Kyle shares a knock knock joke one of his students told him. 2023: Maya is deeply unimpressed with Tik Tokkers teaching incorrect ASL. Jean-Phillipe encourages everyone to celebrate Eurovision with himself and Marie-Ange. Clarice announces it’s time for CPR recertification. Terry and Arthur have a typical morning discussion in the suite he shares with Kyle - right up until something slightly unusual happens. 2024: Illyana texts Warren to let him know she's taking Fourteen to the spa on his dime. PHASE 1 2003: Jean and Ororo take the students on a field trip to the Museum of Natural History. 2004: Amanda gives Betsy a birthday present. Nathan talks to Moira about furthering his powers training, and Amanda and Angelo talk about the future of their friendship. Angelo also catches up with Marie, and has a deep talk with Jane, who gets comfort from Bobby. 2005: Remy asks Betsy to work for him on mansion security. Buy Now, Pay Later: Remy and Amanda meet Charlie Plunder for the first time. Remy tells Lorna he’s not going to the wedding because he needs to investigate a tie between Magneto, Denver and drugs; Jake finds out he’ll be missing the wedding to help Remy investigate. 2006: Pete’s new team gets a place to set up office. 2007: Ahab (plot): Nathan and Angelo discuss methods to deal with things; Pete gets a lead, and Nathan and Ororo follow it up to a broker who deals in mercenaries; Nathan passes on the names of the potential mercenaries to Pete; the staff organise laser tag in the Danger Room; Gorgeous George, one of the mercenaries, watches the Hounds being fed and begins to have doubts. Yvette and Jan talk about the X-Men. Mondo and Garrison discuss being helpless and ways to cope. 2008: Mother's Day - Jay sends flowers to his mother, like most of the rest of the clan.
