Amanda shuddered and looked to the hole she'd dug, the fresh dirt dark against the grass. Tante had known. Of course she had known. She gave Marie-Ange, still standing on the porch of the shack, an agonised look. "We have... we have to bury him." "You made her dig a grave?" Marie-Ange's eye couldn't leave the shovel, the silt caking Amanda's hands, Tante's calm expression. "You knew this entire time and did... " She struggled to keep her hands still, to not pull at her hair or pluck a card from a hidden pocket. "More of the never change the future, don't use your precognition, you... you've been telling me this shit for decades and now Garrison is dead, and we could have known. I saw it and you did and you made Amanda dig a grave for her friend, what right do you have to talk about honoring a man you've never met? To ask us to bury him here, as far from his home as possible, after he died trying to save us? No." She looked at Amanda, at Jean, at Tante. "We take him home, we tell his father, he's already grieved once, and now I have to tell him again that his son is dead and I cannot even give him a funeral? I cannot." Tante's expression didn't so much as twitch while Marie-Ange tossed her words back at her, crashing against and washing away like a wave on a rocky shore. "De future isn't built on actions and events. It is built on choices. Changing it means taking dose choices away from someone else. Even for de best of reasons. Because den it stops being de future and starts being de future dat you and you alone want. Is dat de power jah want, Marie-Ange? Where de only person dat really ever chooses is you?" Finally, she sighed, the first crack in her seemingly impenetrable serenity. "Dat man is dead and de three of you are marked by Candra's men. Jah chances of escaping are significantly less wit' carrying dat body along. Do jah want to risk wasting his sacrifice or will de three people dat love him give him dat final honour?" Her eyes moved from each of the three. "Dat's a choice only jah can make." Jean hadn't spoken much after the dust had settled, or in this case, the blood had started to dry. She heard the arguments back and forth, staring down at Garrison's body in her lap. He had already started to go cold. She brushed a few stray hairs away from his forehead, closing her eyes for a moment before letting out a breath. "She's right. There's too much heat right now. We can come back for him. Once we've gotten reinforcements," she said. Amanda exhaled and climbed slowly to her feet, absently brushing the chunks of broken safety glass off her knees, ignoring the small cuts some left behind. Then she turned to her girlfriend, looking at her beseechingly. "Angie?" "It's not right." Marie-Ange shook her head. "It's not right, we made choices, and they were all wrong. We can't leave him." She sat down abruptly on the edge of the porch, and crumpled her face into her hands. "He's been all wrong since Olivier, and everywhere we turn, we get nothing." Her shoulders shook - but her voice was steady, firm and furious. "Even if we leave, even without Garrison, Candra's men bring this nightmare back to the mansion." "Then we don't go back to the mansion. But Tante's right. We can't take him with us. And we can't leave him to the system, just another John Doe." Amanda's voice was steady, but her expression was torn with grief. "I hate it too. But what other choice do we have?" Marie-Ange looked up, rage and grief ravaging her face for a moment, and then went frozen, absolutely still. "None, all our choices have been neatly stolen from us. Garrison's choices were stolen from him, and now we are cemented here." She stood. "If we do this, we do it correctly. A proper burial, as much as we can." She glanced up at the sky, still heavy with clouds as though a storm could break any moment. "No Valhalla. He lifted that hammer once, I am fearful he will get caught up in some eternal warrior feast. How do we stop that?" "Dis is my bayou. Any Gods or monsters come through Tante first before dey get to de dead. If dey have any sense." Tante said, and for a moment, the force of her personality rolled over them; the certainty of her words as absolute truth. She nodded at the shovels with her chin. "It time to get to work." Today in XProject: January 23 - Tabitha Smith's Birthday PHASE 2 2015: Adrienne emails Jessica and Arthur about starting X-Factor. Wade emails Gabriel about needing to eat. Topaz texts Hope A about having found wine and joining her to drink it. Cecilia emails Angelo about having to quit X-Corps. Laurie posts about having found Kyle’s people. Wade posts about a possible vacation. Wade tracks Gabriel down and they have a talk. Julian stumbles home to find a most unexpected visitor: Sue. Julian texts Adrienne about having lunch with Sue. 2016: Haller sends Cecilia an email asked her to move their lunch to the city due to the weather. Amadeus unveils his Snowdowser 3000X (the X is for Xtreme) to near-universal skepticism. Gabriel posts to the journals wishing he was still in the Caribbean. Alex leaves Tabitha a skateboard as a present. Illyana asks Amadeus if he should really be operating heavy machinery in the middle of the night. After his experience in Meggan and Topaz's minds Haller come to the realization that he no longer belongs at the mansion; Charles has other ideas. Tabitha gets her present, and she loves it and asks what bribes Kyle needs to build a skateboard ramp. While reshelving books with Topaz, Stephen gets some bad ideas to do with magic class. Alex and Bobby play around in the snow. 2017: With Extreme Prejudice: CBS reports that the Mayor is holding a meeting with mutant activist leaders to discuss the recent marches and violence. Maya asks if anyone went to the Women’s March in DC or New York. Cecilia makes a journal post announcing she’s back from the protests in DC. Ty texts Hope A to tell her there are several jewelry boxes waiting for her. 2018: Laurie's life is measurable in coffee. Lorna sets a date in Spring to get take her PI licence test. 2019: 2020: Tandy emails Topaz, Molly and Hope A to arrange a movie outing. 2021: Alex and Kyle go to Count Donutula's on Weird Flavour Day and decide to bring back some of the worst to prank folks at the mansion; that plan flops when Alison and others reveal they like the flavours. 2022: Exorcism Robotica: Garrison wakes up and faces Jean’s anger and disappointment. Emma announces that Adrienne has left the mansion permanently. Amanda finds Garrison in the empty suite he shared with Adrienne and takes him back to her and Marie-Ange’s place. Garrison posts to the main comms explaining what happened since his ‘death’ in August 2021. Emma emails Garrison to express her condolences for Adrienne’s departure. 2023: 2024: Stemming from her debriefing of Arthur, Amanda emails Clea, Stephen and Topaz with various tasks. Hope S. runs into Marius into the halls and the ensuing freakout takes both Kyle and Marie to defuse. Felicia makes an Instagram post. Doug emails Amanda about Marie-Ange not sleeping and doing too much. Jono meets Namor and they talk about folklore. After the incident with Hope S., Marius posts to the journals to re-introduce himself; Match asks Sharon S. to translate Marius’ post into plain English. Alison posts about an odd dream she had about birth-control side-effects that read like the symptoms of lycanthropy. Warren and Illyana have a much deserved spa day. PHASE 1 2004: Amanda sneaks out of medlab to get her healing spellbook so she can fix herself and others after the attack. Doug aids and abets her. 2005: Madelyn gives Scott his team physical. 2006: Terry meets with Scott to ask if she can join the team, and is told to talk to her father. Cain meets Haller and they arrange to go to the pub. Jamie shows up in Scott's office, also to ask about joining the team, with a list of questions. Nathan wanders down to see Cain at the boathouse and they end up going off to meet Haller at Harry's. Haroun invites Alison into the city to choose her engagement ring, asks Nathan to actually make it for her, and checks on his ring's metal composition with Lorna. Cain's entire Elementary History class pass their state exam. 2007: Minitooth: Nathan asks Sofia to update the profile on Sabretooth, using the X-Men's files; Kyle's suitemates try and get him to come out of his room. Marie finds a car in her room, care of Angelo and Forge. 2008: Tabitha has insomnia, and Crystal is quick to point out her hyperbole. Charles makes a post reminding all mansion residents that offensive powers use isn't condoned outside of appropriate settings. The Shadow King: Esteban gets an email from a security company, having checked out the hospice. X-Men Mission: Opera Redux: The X-Men arrive in Israel and realise they're essentially on their own in this mission if anything goes wrong. Agatha Harkness comes to visit Wanda, much to her discomfort; Wanda begins hiding. Marie and Tabitha work out and chat about Tabitha's progress. Forge and Crystal talk, and he asks her out for dinner; Crystal surprises him by agreeing. 2009: Midsummer's Nightmare: Charles announces a joint drama project with one of the local high schools. Catseye tracks down a strange new smell to Cammie in the medlab and they get on rather well. Manuel announces his sister's presence; Adrienne meets with Manuel playing with Valentia in the snow and they talk about the drinking incident and establish they're fine with each other; Morgan drops by to visit the newcomer and Manuel talks her into accepting Remy's job offer; Manuel thanks Amanda for her help and she offers some advice in child adopting; Doug sends Manuel and Valentia sign language dictionaries; Manuel seeks Nathan's advice and finds him distant and distracted. Scott finds Jean-Paul moping about Morgan. Crystal brings Cammie soap for dinner. Yvette wishes Tabitha a happy birthday. Callie announces she's finally caught up with her missed schoolwork. Kyle updates on life and in the course of comments, it's revealed Callie saw Cammie drinking drain cleaner; Zanne reacts badly and emails Jean, concerned. Adrienne and Amanda catch up and talk about the Hellfire Club. Adrienne invites Morgan, Amanda and Jean-Paul out for drinks and discovers that Morgan is going to Africa to see her 'boys' and that she and Jean-Paul are no longer friends. Morgan lets Angelo know she's taking off for a week. Leo emails Charles about needing some more space for a therapeutic sand tray. 2010: Angelo and Jean-Paul meet up in a cafe, they chat. Jubilee and Manuel meet in the morning at the pool. Catseye and Nick go to the zoo and he talks about his sister. 2011: Janet invites everyone to rock it out on Guitar Hero next week. Laura warns Kevin that she will glomp him the next time she sees him. In order to prove that she looks good in a dress, Amanda posts a photo of herself. Megan is excited about her upcoming flying lessons with Warren. While having pastry with Jean-Paul, Jake realises he is being followed. Meggan and Kevin go for waffles and have a long and convoluted conversation. 2012: Layla posts about her slowly improving health and all of the work she has to catch up on. 2013: Clint trains with Logan in the gym. Tandy texts Topaz about meeting up. Haller and Betsy practice some yoga moves that look intimate to an intruding Hope, who runs away but is retrieved by Haller to meet Betsy. Sue texts Tandy about meeting up to watch a movie. Jean leaves a mug for Tabitha for her birthday. Hope texts Billy to tell him about a potato she found. 2014: Ty posts on his journal for the first time, introducing himself. Clint and Namor meet by the archery range.
